What is new and exciting in this edition?

Data modeling may be a timeless art but the Snowflake platform continues to evolve. New database objects that were merely rumors at the time of the first edition have now become core features of the Snowflake toolkit and are explored in detail in the second edition. Objects like Iceberg and Dynamic Tables not only unlock new possibilities within Snowflake but also introduce new paradigms in data management. The book also introduces concepts like Lakehouse to help readers explore the potential of these innovations. Additionally, the role of AI in data modeling, along with examples of AI-enabled analytics in Snowflake, represents significant advancements that didn't exist when the first edition was published. With so many changes occurring in the data landscape, the second edition aims to help readers stay informed and thrive during these exciting times.

What is your favorite part of the book and why?

In the first edition, I aimed to create a practical guide to data modeling that would provide value to business teams. While I equipped readers with the necessary practical and technical skills for data modeling, I overlooked the skills needed to engage business teams effectively. This edition expands beyond data modeling to explore KPIs in project management, offering readers a practical playbook for promoting data modeling within their organizations. It also emphasizes the importance of convincing business stakeholders to support budget proposals backed by relevant business metrics. The ability to foster collaboration between business and data teams is the key differentiator between successful data modeling initiatives that deliver value and those that fail to move beyond the proposal stage.

Which chapter did you find most intriguing to write?

The chapter on semantic models and Cortex AI was particularly enjoyable to explore for several reasons. Firstly, it’s exciting to think about interacting with data using natural language and having AI generate and execute SQL queries to produce results. However, the chapter also emphasizes that the processes behind this technology are not magical; a well-structured and nuanced data model is essential for AI to yield meaningful outcomes. It serves as a crucial demonstration for those who advocate for the importance of data modeling and governance, countering the notion that "AI will solve all problems." The chapter highlights that cutting corners on data modeling only leads to bad data, and often at a significant cost.

What do you hope your readers will take away from this edition?

The data landscape is evolving rapidly, with technologies like Iceberg, Dynamic and Hybrid tables, and AI-enabled analytics reshaping how we work with data. This book equips readers not just with technical know-how, but with practical strategies to implement these tools effectively in real-world settings.

Beyond the tech, I emphasize the business acumen needed to drive change — because many data modeling efforts fail due to a lack of stakeholder alignment, not technical gaps. This edition includes frameworks to build business relationships and demonstrate impact through relevant metrics.

Above all, I want readers to champion data modeling in their organizations, blending strong fundamentals with modern tools to deliver lasting value in this AI-driven era.
