In this tutorial paper, commonly used approaches to channel estimation are reviewed. Both time\u2010invariant and time\u2010varying channels are considered. For time\u2010varying channels, both pilot symbol interpolation and data\u2010directed channel tracking are considered. Applications include the Global System for Mobile communications, the Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution system, and another Time\u2010Division Multiple\u2010Access system known as Telecommunications Industry Association\/Electronics Industry Association\/Interim Standard\u2014136 (TIA\/EIA\/IS\u2010136 or IS\u2010136).
