By design, we (the Design and Media Spaces Area at Xerox PARC) mean the creation of the new, whether it is architecture, painting, or engineering. We believe that design is a social activity---the interactions of individuals within a group and the relation of groups to one another. Another way we express this point of view is to say design is the social construction of a technical reality.
