Announcing the Outstanding Student-Led Podcast Higher Ed PodCon Award Finalists! From 109 incredible nominations across 5 categories, our group of 25 volunteers from the higher ed podcast community reviewed each nominee at least three times to bring you the finalists. This was a daunting task, not only because of the number of nominations but also because of their outstanding quality. All of the nominees were deserving of recognition! With that, we are proud to announce that the finalists for the Higher Ed PodCon Outstanding Student-Led Podcast Award are: “Major Insight” from Miami University, submitted by James M. Loy. The podcast places students at the center of the storytelling process, with students serving as hosts, producers, and creative contributors while sharing authentic conversations about college life, personal growth, and campus experiences. “The Bridge” from UCL, submitted by Indianna Dimmer. Produced through the Student Union at UCL, the podcast is shaped directly by students who select topics, host conversations, coordinate guests, and lead promotional efforts across the university community. “Madison Science Mystery Tour” from WSUM, the University of Wisconsin-Madison student radio station, submitted by Nalina Cherr. Hosted, edited, and directed by a student, the podcast makes scientific research approachable and engaging while highlighting the diverse experiences and passions of researchers across campus. And “Curing the Curriculum: Students’ Take on Medical Education” from the University of Groningen, submitted by Ulf E.. Produced entirely by medical students, the podcast explores medical education through student-led interviews, research, editing, publishing, and social media engagement. The winner will be announced at HigherEd PodCon this July! With presenters from across the globe representing top institutions of all sizes and categories in higher education, we look forward to celebrating your success!

Wow, Think Fast Talk Smart: The Podcast cracked the top 30 of All Podcasts on Apple in Canada. Proud to be part of the team as we approach our 300th episode. Charts are great, but it's even better to read all the emails and reviews we receive about how TFTS is helping people show up with more confidence, communicate clearly, and move their careers forward Congrats to Matt Abrahams and the rest of the small but mighty team working on the podcast.

A few weeks ago I sat down with Neil McPhedran and Jennifer-Lee Gunson on the Continuing Studies Podcast. We covered a lot of ground — why FreshEd started, how it grew from a one-man operation into something resembling a network, and what I think still needs to change for podcasting to get a real seat at the table in academia. One thing I kept coming back to is the question of legitimacy. There are academics right now sitting on podcast projects, or wanting to start one, who feel like they don't have permission. That's not a small thing. And the fix isn't just cultural — it's getting language into promotion and tenure policies that actually counts these outputs. One line in a policy document can do a lot. The other thing I talked about, which I find myself returning to more and more, is Walter Ong's idea of secondary orality. Podcasting isn't some break from literate culture — it grows out of it. Good interviewing requires deep reading. That framing helps me explain why this work deserves to be taken seriously, not as an alternative to academic writing but as something built on top of it. Anyway, it was a great conversation with two people who genuinely love this medium.
