The more work AI takes on, the more precise we need to be about what it is allowed to do. More autonomy doesn’t mean fewer controls. It requires more precise ones. The model can understand the objective, investigate what’s happening, weigh options, and adapt a plan. But reasoning about what should happen is not the same as having the authority or execution logic to make it happen. The application remains authoritative for what is true, what is allowed, and what gets executed. For AI to operate with greater autonomy, the boundaries need to be clear: whose authority it operates under, what it can access, what actions it can take, and when a person needs to step in. That’s how people can step out of constant manual coordination without stepping away from accountability. Part 3 of The Three-Body Problem of Enterprise AI: Autonomy Requires Control.
