🐛Yes, insects send each other messages✅ No, they don’t have WhatsApp📱❌ They use chemical signals called semiochemicals, and farmers can use those same signals to manage pests in a targeted way🎯 Pheromones, for example, can help monitor pests or even disrupt their mating. Semiochemicals often work at very low rates. Yet some do not receive low-risk status under the current general criteria, even when their use produces exposure similar to levels found in nature. 🚨This is another example of why biocontrol and low-risk status are not the same thing. Applying some mating disruption by drone with Elliot D. and Cody Hays! Sprayed CheckMate® DBM-F at a tiny 2 GPA over some newly transplanted broccoli. With diamondback moth, the objective is to establish mating disruption as early as possible and maintain it throughout the season - thereby suppressing reproduction from the start instead of waiting for populations and crop damage to build. Nearby, I picked some mature purple cauliflower to take home with me.
