Setting up TVPC

Merry Christmas, all,

I am so done with rokus, that have excellent wifi, connect to the internet, but when you try to install apps, (apparently) it can't get to the internal roku network/repositories. I have been fighting with them for a while, including one that I factory reset and it was never able to connect to the roku network.

So I am setting up a TVPC (HTPC, whatever you want to call it). What I envision is a small form factor PC (I picked up a Lenovo M710q Tiny, physically bigger than a RPi, but also cheaper for more compute)...This one has a 7th gen i5 with 8GB of RAM. Should be plenty for the use case. Obviously, the TV will be it's monitor, and I am going to get a media remote, one of them with the QWERTY keyboard on the underside.

So I was wondering if anyone has set up a pc like this or if anyone has pointers to good sources of docs/best practices. I know in a broad sense what I am looking to do, but looking for someone that has experienced the gotchas. I'm basically trying to set up a FreeBSD kiosk terminal, running a browser that will have a few tabs -- one for the local content on jellyfin, one for netflix (unless I decide to drop it like a bad habit, like I did with plex and like I am doing with roku), and probably amazon prime. I was thinking about setting up i3 (presuming it has a persistent mode) with a single browser window, possibly auto-login for the htpc user.

Here is the blog post I did yesterday to start lining things out in my own mind. Anyone got suggestions?

One thing I just learned was that in order to watch netflix on FreeBSD, I am going to have to set up brave in the linuxulator. It's tips like this that I am fishing for.

One little thing, HDMI-CEC is a bit of an issue. The Pulse-eight USB-CEC adapter is quite a useful gadget. Works with Kodi.
Do I need something like that? I was planning to get a separate remote for the pc. Something similar to https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CL3ZXGO. I would use the TV remote to change inputs to the pc, which would have a browser running, and control it from the pc remote, which is similar to what I do with the roku today.

HDMI-CEC looks like a remote control sharing tech from my perusal of the link you provided...

Depends, I like to configure everything to work with the TV's remote. That's what CEC is mostly used for. Automatically switching channels on my AVR for example. Very useful to be able to do.
