What is required to electrify a new light metro network across Greater Montréal? Ⓜ️ For the Réseau express métropolitain (REM), the answer was to design an overhead power system capable of supplying a fully electric, automated network spanning 67 km. @Equans Services Canada worked with the NouvLR consortium on this project, bringing its international rail electrification expertise to its first rail electrification project in Canada. Our scope covered providing technical support to finalise the catenary design, followed by the detailed engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the system across the REM project. At the heart of this system are the overhead cables and contact wires that supply the trains with 1,500 V DC power. The REM is already changing the way people move across Greater Montréal, with 23 stations currently in service. Once completed, the automated light metro will extend across 67 km, connecting Montreal, the South Shore, the West Island and the North Shore. The airport branch is still to come. This is a major infrastructure project and a concrete example of what rail electrification looks like at scale. ⚡️Electrify energy. Reindustrialise Europe (batteries, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals). Digitalise cities and factories. In a new interview with L'Hémicycle TV, Jérôme Stubler , CEO of Equans, pointed out that France has access to abundant, decarbonised energy that few countries possess. The task now is to put it to full use. Decarbonise at scale. Electrify industrial heat and transport. Cool buildings using heat and cold stored in the ground. These solutions exist, they work, and they are proven elsewhere in Europe. The real obstacle is not technological. It lies in governance. One example. In the Gard, in France, our detection systems prevented more than a hundred fires from taking hold this summer. The technology was ready. One of the most visible ways in which we are reducing our carbon footprint can be seen parked outside. 🚘 Reducing our carbon footprint requires us to examine the way our teams travel every day. Our vehicle fleet is one of the areas we’re focusing on. In 2025, 17% of our light and heavy vehicles were electric, up from 9% in 2024 and less than 5% in 2023. 🌱 Our goal is to have 80% electric vehicles by 2030 in countries with a favourable energy mix. However, electrification is only part of the story. We are also working on how vehicles are used, through measures such as car sharing, mobility credits and fleet optimisation. Alongside actions relating to our buildings, these efforts have contributed to a 15% reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 emissions between 2023 and 2025. Our 2030 target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions from our fleet and buildings by 42%, excluding energy production. What do copper, lithium and electrification have in common? A lot of it starts in Chile and Peru. ⚡️ Together, the two countries account for around 50% of the world’s copper production and lithium reserves, two resources that will play a critical role in the electrification of our economies. During his visit to Chile and Peru, Olivier Roussat, CEO of Bouygues, met with some of the nearly 6,000 Equans colleagues supporting customers across the region. It was an opportunity to discuss Equans’ growth potential, meet our teams in the field, and reaffirm our commitment to key customers by bringing forward both technological and process innovations. Electrification doesn’t mean replacing everything with electricity. ⚡️ It begins with a simple question: where is energy really needed, and where is it being wasted? On an industrial site, for example, the answer can be found in process heat, cooling, compressed air, motors, heating systems, and energy lost during production. This is why decarbonisation is not just about changing technologies. It's about getting the sequence right: - Reduce energy needs - Recover what can be reused - Then, electrify the relevant processes. 🧰 Take industrial heat, for example. The energy released by a cooling process can be recovered and reused elsewhere on the same site. When combined with heat pumps or electric equipment, what was once wasted can become a resource, thereby reducing both fossil fuel consumption and emissions. This logic can be applied far beyond factories. Buildings can adjust their heating, ventilation and cooling systems according to occupancy levels. Supermarkets can recover heat generated by refrigeration systems. Infrastructure can combine electrification with smarter energy management. However, technology is only part of the equation. 👷♀️ Scaling up these solutions requires the right skills in the right places. It is engineers, electricians, automation specialists and maintenance technicians who integrate, install, operate and maintain these systems. These are local capabilities that cannot simply be relocated, and they are a critical part of building long-term energy resilience. 🌱 It also requires an ecosystem that works together. Grid operators, businesses, solution providers, financial partners and public authorities all have a role to play. Anticipating grid capacity, securing financing and integrating new technologies while keeping operations running must be considered together, not sequentially. The technologies are ready. The challenge now is to create the conditions to deploy them on a large scale. The question is therefore shifting from 'What technology do we need?' to 'How do we bring the right solutions, skills and partners together to make it happen?'
