I think you've confused -p with something else; it isn't one of the "diff
format" options. -p just adds more info to the hunk line; it doesn't
change the format.
We use and recommend "-u3p" for most cases, except where large blocks of
text are being replaced, when "-c3p" tends to be more readable.
