GCC 3.4.0 on Solaris 2.6 - two days to compile!!

I disbelieve.  Building it on a single-CPU Solaris 2.5.1 box took my
university colleagues less than a business day.  Yes, C++ was enabled.

Anyhow, yes, I think for many platforms we should try preloading the cache
with the values we know are going to come out.  Or something else along
the lines of precalculating configuration information.
