Test & fix build on FreeBSD

The build system has support for non-linux/non-macos *nix targets, but we didn't test it, besides Debian/Hurd. We're looking for someone who have FreeBSD installed and could run build and test, and submit a patch if there are issues.

We know there aren't some nice options to simply use a freebsd docker image in the FROM clause of a Dockerfile in the dockerfiles repo - because Linux and BSD don't get along well that way, so some sort of a VM approach has to be followed.

So, here are some options to approach the CI build side of things.

• We could use the freebsd-vm action available in the market place.
  • This should simply allow us to build the roc-toolkit.
  • They have several actions for other BSDs too.
• We could try and do this ourselves - we have to use qemu-system-x86_64 using a disk image.
  • This could be all part of building a docker image in the dockerfiles repo.
  • The disk image would have to be "prepared" and will be part of the actions in the dockerfile repo.

There are some FreeBSD disk images available here. I've used the installer one personally, but there is a BASIC-CI and CLOUDINIT VM images available as well - It's unclear how they are setup, so I'll have to play around.

Oh, and the freebsd-vm actions seem to use qemu and libvirt too. So, it's the same thing that I would be repeating.

Hi all, I have this working on FreeBSD and have a preliminary package but it required a few changes. The SConstruct file has changed since the v0.4.0 release so I won't post a patch directly, but these are the two important changes:

1. FreeBSD does support the MSG_DONTWAIT socket option, but it's hidden if _POSIX_C_SOURCE is defined. I've seen complaints about this elsewhere as FreeBSD is the only platform that does this. I don't know the history here. So I had to add a new 'freebsd' platform and sprinkle it throughout the SConstruct file:

2. the installation prefix isn't picked up from the ENV

On FreeBSD it's expected that the PREFIX env will be honored, and it's not here so I just patch it dynamically in my port for now.

Other than that, it appears to be functional.
