Mun CS Games Winter 2012 Team (Doubles) Competition!

Following up on our Singles competition last month, we're gearing up for our team games on March 9, 2012. Each team will consist of two students - so start finding a partner soon!

The Prizes!

Third place shall receive: A Mun market bag, 6pk of Ms Vickie's chips, a USB memory card reader, a small disc binder, a tin of compressed air, and a Nexxtech LCD/LED screen cleaning kit.

The second place prize pack includes: A Mun market bag, a large disc binder, a tin of compressed air, a copy of Maximum PC magazine, a USB mini-vacuum, and a Nexxtech LCD/LED screen cleaning kit.

Finally, our first place prize pack consists of: A Mun market bag, a tin of compressed air, a USB mouse with interchangeable covers, a variety pack of green teas, a box of hot chocolate mix, and a copy of O'Reilly C Pocket Reference.

The Winter 2012 CS Games Teams (Doubles) are tentatively scheduled for Friday March 9th, 2011, in room EN-2036 at 5pm to 7:30pm. There is a sign up sheet in the CS department head office, please contact them if you are interested in competing - seat are limited (CS students only).

Memorial University CS Games Singles Fall 2011 Results

The Fall 2011 CS Singles programming competition took place last Friday night at Memorial University. Eighteen students took part, trying their skills against the algorithmic conundrums the programming competition committee prepare as their set of three problems.

After 150 minutes the competition time expired and the judges prepared the results.

The volume of submissions for this competition was impressively high, at the end though three students emerged with top results; in third place was Nathanel Woodfine, in second place was Adam Murphy, and finally in first was Robert Hamilton.

Mun CS Games Fall 2011 Singles Competition!

Each Fall and Winter at Memorial University's Computer Science Department an ACM rules programming competition is held for their students. These events have enjoyed much success due to the tireless work of many people on the CS Games committee. To help increase the popularity of the events I started donating prizes to the top placements in the competitions, and this Falls' Singles game is no different, so without more ado...

The Prizes!

The third place prize consists of a Mun market bag, a box of Carnation Hot Chocolate mixes, a Mun mug, a DVD of Office Space, and a copy of O'Reilly UML 2.0 pocket reference.

The second place prize prize consists of a Mun market bag, a box of Carnation Hot Chocolate mixes, a Mun mug, a DVD of Scott Pilgram vs the World, and a copy of O'Reilly JUnit pocket reference.

And finally the first place prize consists of a Mun market bag, a box of Carnation Hot Chocolate mixes, a Mun mug, a DVD of the four Matrix movies, and a copy of O'Reilly Vi and Vim Editors pocket reference.

Some lucky runners up will receive a loot bag containing a Mun pen and a Ubuntu 11.04 install CD -awesome I know!

Memorial University CS Games Team (triples) Fall 2011 Results

The Fall 2011 CS Team Programming Competition took place last Friday night at Memorial University.  Six teams (18 students), took part - trying their skills against the algorithmic conundrums the programming competition committee prepared as their set of three problems (see link for problems & solutions).

After two and half hours of competition we were able to draw the games to a close and announce our top three placements.

In third place, Team C: Megan O'Conner, Ryan Brushett, and Andrew Hobbs.

In second place, Team D: Mark Stacey, Gerry Hall, and Ryan Russell.

Finally in first place, Team A: Robert Robere, Melissa Reid, and Ken Collingwood.

Please join me in wishing them best luck as they head to St. Francis Xavier University to enter the preliminary round of the Atlantic Provinces Council on the Sciences programming competition. If they place in the top three teams at SFX then they will advance to the Northeast North America Regional Competition of the 2010-2011 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest sponsored by IBM.

Memorial University CS Games Team (doubles) Winter 2011 Results

The Winter 2011 CS Team Programming Competition took place last Friday night at Memorial University.  Seven teams, 14 students, took part - trying their skills against the algorithmic conundrums the programming competition committee prepared as their set of three problems.

The students remained dutifully quiet throughout the evening, working on their solutions - barely taking a break to enjoy the drinks, cookies, and pizzas the department of Computer Science & Committee had sponsored.

After two and half hours of competition we were able to draw the games to a close, and tabulate the results. Our game sponsors then took center stage to present our top placements.

Memorial University CS Games Singles Winter 2011 Results

The Winter 2011 CS Singles Programming Competition took place at Memorial University last night. Fourteen students registered for their opportunity to try their algorithmic skills on three problems developed by the Mun Programming Competition committee.

The night started off to a unique challenge as the power to the light system was shutdown. I'm not sure if any of the students really noticed this however as they focused in on solving their problems.

After thirty minutes the power was restored, and the competition got into full swing. The lab room was uncharacteristically quiet for the entire evening, with the students barely breaking for a slice of pizza, a cookie or a drink. Two hours later the regulation competition time was over and we were able to announce our winners. Our games sponsors then took center stage to present our top placements with their prize packages.

Mun CS Games Winter 2011 Singles Competition!

Each Fall and Winter at Memorial University's Computer Science Department an ACM rules programming competition is held for their students. In the spring of 2010 I attempted to boost student interest by providing some prizes, this went over very well for all involved. Last Fall I continued the gesture, and this Winter continue it again.

The third place prize is being sponsored by IDBlue. The prize pack consists of a copy of Java Pocket Reference, a copy of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, a Mun water bottle, a Mun market bag, and a Mun pen:

Memorial University Fall 2010 CS Team Programming Competition Results

The Fall 2010 CS Team Programming Competition took place at Memorial University this evening. Five teams entered, vying to win prizes and obtain the honor of representing the Mun CS Department at the regional APICS games.
I've copied in a few pics taken during the competition... all in all everyone had a lot of laughs, good willed fun, and geeked out.

I'd like to congratulate the first place team, Josh McCarthy, Hazel Dalton, and David Hornell, on a job well done. They will move on to the next round of games at Saint Mary's University. As a side note, all three team members are student employees at ICAN - they have a great talent pool here!

A solid performance was displayed by the second place team consisting of Chris Whalen, Robert Robere, and Stephen Piercey.

And finally in third place, the team of Nathael Woodfine, Sarah McCausland, and Megan O'Connor.

I'd like to wish best luck to the Mun CS team as they move up the APICS competitions into the ACM games. I'd also like to thank all the students, volunteers, and the games committee again for making these CS games possible.
