In Phoenix Rises, George Nobechi’s fine art photography documents lava tree moulds formed by the 1783 eruption of Mt. Asama along the Nagano–Gunma border in Japan. These volcanic formations resemble natural wells, each containing a small, self-contained world of moss, ferns, and insect life. Created over a two-year period, the photographic series reflects on renewal emerging from loss and has been presented in exhibitions, including in Karuizawa near the site of the moulds, and as carefully produced photographic prints.
