Jujutsu Kaisen

Idly indulging in baseless paranormal activities with the Occult Club, high schooler Yuuji Itadori spends his days at either the clubroom or the hospital, where he visits his bedridden grandfather. However, this leisurely lifestyle soon takes a turn for the strange when he unknowingly encounters a cursed item. Triggering a chain of supernatural occurrences, Yuuji finds himself suddenly thrust into the world of Curses—dreadful beings formed from human malice and negativity—after swallowing the said item, revealed to be a finger belonging to the demon Sukuna Ryoumen, the King of Curses.

Yuuji experiences first-hand the threat these Curses pose to society as he discovers his own newfound powers. Introduced to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, he begins to walk down a path from which he cannot return—the path of a Jujutsu sorcerer.

(Rewatching because of the newest season)

I first watched Jujutsu Kaisen back in 2020 when the episodes were being released weekly, and I immediately fell in love with the anime and its characters (I even have a Gojo figure and three Itadori plushies x3).

Now, five years later, I decided to rewatch it, and I’m still just as in love with it as I was back then. The animation is absolutely amazing, and it still stands out as some of the best in anime. I also really appreciate how well the characters are developed throughout Season 1, you get to see their personalities, struggles, and relationships grow ... in such a natural way.

The story is still emotional, engaging, and full of memorable moments, and it honestly feels just as impactful the second time around. Rewatching it reminded me why I loved this series so much in the first place.

I’m so glad I decided to revisit Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s a series that truly holds up over time, and I can’t wait to continue watching with the newer seasons.

Mixed Feelings

Watched on Crunchyroll and Theatres

This review covers all currently released seasons and the films.

The production quality is the main strength. Distinct visual direction, high-fluidity animation, strong colour work, and consistently polished action sequences. Violence is stylized with minimal censorship and remains visually coherent. The soundtrack is effective, including several standout electronic tracks that elevate fight scenes. Technical presentation is the only area where the series delivers at a top level.

The narrative foundation is derivative. A high-school protagonist with a tragic past drawn into supernatural combat repeats formulas already seen in Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Blue Exorcist, Inuyasha, and Demon Slayer. The framework shifts terminology to ... “curses,” but the underlying structure remains unchanged. The series relies heavily on familiar tropes: chosen-one framing, moral purity of the lead, and rapid power escalation unsupported by grounded internal logic.

Character writing suffers. Motivations are shallow, frequently reduced to revenge cycles or single-note personality beats. The story tends to halt progression in favour of extended flashbacks for nearly every antagonist, diluting pacing and emotional impact. Instead of selective, meaningful backstory, the series inserts tragic origins for virtually every character, which erodes tension and reduces narrative focus.

Power scaling becomes inconsistent. Conflicts resolve through abrupt leaps in strength, unestablished abilities, or absence of higher-tier characters without clear justification. The result is a sequence of set pieces with limited causality.

Secondary cast members, including faculty figures, have minimal narrative presence. Meanwhile, less-experienced students often carry major confrontations, breaking internal hierarchy without organic explanation. Stakes fluctuate without coherent structure, and the world building lacks the sense of systemic depth that the premise demands.

The series delivers high audiovisual craftsmanship but lacks originality, thematic weight, and structural discipline. It resembles a visually upgraded compilation of ideas seen many times before, presented with intensity but limited substance. It entertains moment-to-moment, yet leaves little lasting impact.

In my opinion, it's a bad anime that is overhyped. It consists of nothing but action, and I can't give an anime an 8/10 or 9/10 just because it has action.
To summarize:
There is a character named Itadori Yuuji who is a vessel (I won't go into side characters much). Generally, there are specific battles (I won't go into detail or give spoilers). I don't like the story because it lacks depth.
In general:
It doesn't convey a specific message.
The story is average.
Character development is zero.
The plot is very superficial; if you like Seinen, you won't like this. It’s just mindless action.
Animation:
I don't care much about animations and ... art styles, but I should mention that the drawings seem good and the animations are nice. However, there were parts in Season 2 that felt rushed (I won't lower or raise the score because of this).
Characters:
I didn't like the characters much. Especially Gojo stands out unnecessarily, and people watch it just for him; I don't think that makes much sense.
Conclusion:
If you like action and Shounen, I can't say, but if you like Seinen, you won't like this anime.
