I have had a difficult time with modern anime but two anime this decade I thought were incredible were the new Shinichiro Watanabe show Lazarus, which is sort of a post-modern ripoff of his own show Cowboy Bebop but for the malaise and depression of the 2020s. It's like slightly unfinished seeming but also literally stunning, at least to me. Nothing else right now captures what it's like to be Gen-Z. The other thing is Virgin Punk, which is a 30 minute "film" directed by Yasuomi Umetsu of Kite and Mezzo Forte fame. Virgin Punk is supposed to be the first act of a trilogy but since it took 8 years to animate and is only 30 minutes I don't expect to get more soon. Still, it's the best looking anime IMO since at least Redline, and expresses beauty and agony more sharply than his already amazing previous works. I'm probably crazy for picking these two. Miyazaki's new film The Boy and the Heron is also very very good. More abstract than he usually goes for, more adult in the sense of being pretty uninterested in making sure children can understand it. His second best movie in my opinion.
I got married last week to the most amazing person I know, so I am doing very well. Trying to apply to grad school for film studies. Time really does fly. Do you keep up with much anime? I am trying to watch three shows this season .
Hey! Are you still around? I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, I think I forgot at the time and then was too embarrased because it had been so long, but I figure that's counterproductive.
Went through school and got a job as a pilot, laid off for now though - not much travel happening with the pandemic ramping up. So I’m watching a lot more than I was, got a shit ton of free time to binge stuff nowadays lmao
