Yeah, I suck at trying to categorize what I enjoy, especially when it comes to anime & music 😂 I can start some ramble trying to analyze it, but invariably I run into a paradox or contradiction I can’t explain. In the end falling back on “I like what I like & don’t what I don’t” 😂 Again the most influential period music wise for me was junior high through college, so late 70s thru early 90s. I get that it’s not the same vibe, but the first video you posted along with your description conjures up memories of Joan Jett for me

I’ve always been behind the times as to how I accessed media. Already mentioned that I’ve only been streaming anime less than 10 years. Believe it or not, how I listened to music until just a couple years ago was radio. Not digital, over the air broadcast 😂 And my CD collection (not as big as my anime dvd/bluray one though). I’ve been using Youtube more recently.
Cool that you used to play the piano. I did too, but last time I tried couldn’t get my fingers to stretch the way they used to.

Yona & Ergo Proxy are both titles I’ve missed out on, but are on my “someday” list.
That MHA song was definitely nostalgic for me. More recently, Little Glee Monster did the ED for Rock is a Lady’s Modesty (enjoyed it, but needs a continuation since we still know very little about the 2 MCs backstories. Here’s an AMV for the song using footage from the show

You certainly look like you’re having fun (ah, the energy of youth 😂). Thanks for sharing 😁 Actually reminds me of a time I was with friends at one of their house. Their parents left to run errands & we piled every couch/chair/bed cushion/pillow in the house on the floor. Covered them in blankets & started running through the house crashing into them, doing pratfalls & WWF moves. Also nice nice that some of your friends & family played along. Love the doggos 😊 From preschool through my 40s I had anywhere from 2 to 5 dogs at a time as part of my family. Due to life circumstances I haven’t had one of my own for several years, but my boss brings their’s to work to act as an office therapy animal 😂 When it comes to cats, I usually prefer them animated but the face of the one in your video is adorable.

Thanks for the recommendation! It sounds really interesting. I’ll save it to read later.
Kugoto Jan 28, 10:18 PM
I usually gravitate more toward psychological, horror, and thriller stories, especially manga. I really enjoy works that keep me intrigued and make me think, letting me piece things together and deduce what’s going on. I do read some Korean titles too, but I definitely read more Japanese works overall.
And yeah, it’s funny how the algorithm matched us despite our different tastes, but that’s part of what makes it interesting.
Kugoto Jan 27, 9:27 PM
I’m glad you liked it! I had really similar reactions when I read it too, it’s an incredible story.
As for webtoons, I haven’t read that many, but one I enjoyed, at least from what I read so far, and that you apparently haven’t read yet, is The Boxer.
Kugoto Jan 26, 9:23 PM
I saw that you finished reading Pigpen. What did you think of it?
Ohayotaku Jan 26, 4:07 PM
I can actually see the appeal of that most recent song 😅 For me emo/angsty was largely songs like When I’m Gone (3 Doors Down) & In The End (Linkin Park). And this one

I’m not attracted to dudes but can appreciate when they're cool or have style. They’re at least a couple reverse harems I found enjoyable (Ouran H.S. Host Club, Pretear, Meiji Tokyo Renka, Phantom in the Twilight), though I am by no means a connoisseur. I think Yona of the Dawn in one I’ve heard good things about, so another one on my list to check out when I get tired of seasonals (also saw a recent article where a new season is in the works).

I actually watched Desert Punk, though I apparently forgot to add it when I created my MAL account years later. A lot of times I dislike pervert MCs, but that one was actually funny 😂

Since I started anime with Americanized versions on tv & later VHS tapes, I’m familiar with some of the veteran or at least well known English speaking VAs. From my DVD era onwards I’ve generally preferred the original Japanese seiyuu, but there are exceptions. The english dub of Cowboy Bebop in particular is superior to IMO. Also Steel Angel Kurumi which had a cast of pretty much the top female VA’s of the time (Monica Rial, Hilary Haag, Kira Vincent Davis, Shelley Calene-Black). My favorites are probably Steven Blum (Spike Spiegel, Roger Smith) Wendee Lee (Faye Valentine & way to many others to list) & Lisa Ortiz (Lina Inverse). On the Japanese side my faves are probably Junichi Suwabe & Saori Hayami, many others listed on my profile page.

I did not know that about Sunraku’s VA, hillarious considering he’s even wearing a mask in the tournament arc season 2 ended on. I’ve seen a lot a people complain whenever SLF shifted the focus away from the title game, but to me it makes the players feel more realistic because it shows how their core personalities carry through their different avatars. Another fun fact, I read an article that Sunraku & Emul’s Japanese seiyuu were dating are married.

Since you commented on anime OP/EDs with English lyrics, I’ll close with a couple of those

Power stayed on, but not a great weekend 😢 I’m in SW Ohio, we got about a foot of snow, not looking forward to trying to dig out tomorrow morning with temps not getting above the single digits (not supposed to get above 20 for at least a week). Probably sound like a crybaby, but honestly would like to hibernate from 12/26 - 04/01 every year.

Thanks for sharing the video (quite appropriate the weather outside 😂) Yeah, it’s more than a little intimidating when people start getting into all the different subgenres. Honestly I pretty much just know what I like when I hear it. Mostly late 70s through the 90s since that was my “youth”. Runs the gamut from hard rock to sappy/cheezey, even a bit of country.

For someone who’s been watching anime as long as I have, there’s actually a good number of “essentials” I haven’t actually finished. Since I started using streaming sites for a little less than 10 years I’ve focused a lot on sampling what each season has to offer & exploring different genres. I can tell the appeal of that approach is waning though. Doubt I’ll ever stop watching new stuff entirely, but definitely see myself shifting focus to catching up on what I’ve missed out on & eventually revisiting some titles from back in my dub era to see if/how my perspectives have changed.

Glad you found Migi & Dali enjoyable (definitely strange, at times cringe, but also stood out as memorable for me). I honestly think Maomao is one of the best female anime characters ever. She can be “prickly” but I find her to very a very engaging character.

I don’t mind lengthy posts as long as you don’t 😂 Will close out with a couple obscure anime OP/EDs that I like

Wow 😲 It’s really cool that you’ve found a way to combine something that interests you / you enjoy with your career. While I wouldn’t say I dislike my job, it’s very much just a way to pay for the necessities (food, shelter, streaming subscriptions 😂 ).

Thanks for the Fairy Tail excerpts (I especially liked the first one 🔥) I haven’t gotten really far into the series, but enjoyed what I’ve seen. Confession, I hadn’t actually seen any full eps with Brandish. I’d come across some clips of her on Youtube and went looking for more because I thought she was sexy (that was a couple years ago). I do consider finding out more about her to be one more reason to get back into the series at some point. Long running shonen just hasn’t been that big of a draw for me in general, I think in part because they weren’t my intro to anime which was the works of Leiji Matsumoto & other scifi or giant robot series. I still need to pick Hunter x Hunter back up with the Chimera Ant Arc 😅 Also watch more of Fairy Tail & Black Clover once I’m past the seasonal phase of my anime journey. Some of my favorite shonen are FMA:B, Soul Eater, Ushio & Tora and Busou Renkin. Planning to start Fire Force’s final arc soon & recently finished MHA, but not planning to follow Vigilantes (the main series had it’s ups & downs, enjoyable overall but it’s run it’s course for me).

I’m not that into metal except for some of the well known examples. Closest thing for me is probably some of the hair bands & I do like a good bit of Def Leppard

I’ll also take the opportunity to share some metal covers I enjoyed of non-metal songs

They’re predicting bitterly cold temps & a snow/ice storm for the weekend where I live, so gonna try to prep so I can close the door Friday night & not open it again until Monday morning (and hope the power stays on) 😂 Hope things go well with the rest of your week & you enjoy your weekend 😁

Cannot lie, banger of an OP. Though I was never really into “The Big 3”. One Piece was the one I spent the most time on, and i still burned out around 150 episodes (early Skypeia arc). Used to think I’d dive back in later, still could, but not really a bucket list thing for me anymore.

I’ve been fascinated by animation as a medium my whole life. I will always consider my intro to anime being Star Blazers (the Americanized broadcast tv version of Space Battleship Yamato) in the late 70s or early 80s when I was around 10. Blew my pre-teen mind to have a “cartoon” that actually told a coherent story about war where characters actually matured & in some cases actually died. Was obsessed enough by it to actually set my alarm to watch it over summer break. I was pretty much restricted to other highly edited for television series into the 90s (Robotech in the late 80s was my other obsession). Started out buying VHS tapes of anime around the mid/late 90s (Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Slayers, Magic Knight Rayearth). Didn’t have cable, so missed out on Toonami which was a lot of Western fans intro. But moved on to dvds which was when I started watching subtitled versions. Kinda went into a slump around 2010 when things were transitioning to streaming. Started using streaming sites around 2017, which brings things up to the present.

I was really into the Spiderman & X-men comics in the 70s & 80s, but startedh to lose interest in the early 2000s as I focused more on anime. Was never as much into manga as anime, but did follow Battle Angel Alita, Ah My Goddess & a number of Tokyopop titles. Actually trying to get a bit more into manga recently.

Will close things out with some vids. Love Zombie Land Saga’s ED for it’s vocal harmony with simple piano accompaniment. And Double Decker’s ED as an example of weak anime series, but banger of a song. Finally Jealous Eyes from the Project A-ko soundtrack.

Thank you for the compliments 😁 I’m glad to find someone I can nerd out with too. I genuinely miss the good old days of comicbook shops, video game arcades & mall video stores I used to hang out in 😢 I’ve tried to find interests more common to grown-ups (which I supposedly am), but honestly I don’t see the appeal in most. But you’ve already seen how I can ramble on when the topic is anime :P . If it does get to be a bit much, please let me know so I can try to dial it back a bit 😂 Glad that the new take on Trigun seem likes something you can appreciate & hope you enjoy it when you get around to checking it out. I know what you mean as to Vash looking younger (Meryl too). My initial thought when I saw the trailers was that it might be a prequel to the OG, but nope, just an alternate take on the characters & events. Agree that the OP is awesome & really suits the series. Thank you for the video you shared. I liked the song & the visuals are really nice. My favorite anime songs are probably the OP for Bubblegum Crisis OVA & ED for Fate Zero season 1. And cheezie as it is, the original Project A-ko’s OST 😂

I also use my phone primarily to view & reply, so I’ve gotten used to having to switch between mobile & desktop views. I’ll usually check for replies/comments when I’m at work (gotta do something on my breaks since I don’t smoke/vape) & might make a quick post or reply. But for anything more involved it may be evening before I respond (also gives me more time to check for typos & make sure I’m somewhat coherent).

Anyway, that’s probably enough for now. You’re welcome to comment or DM anytime you feel like it.
