Secondly, the characters felt like typical shonen characters. Especially the main character is the typical “i need to help everyone” type, with no growth. There was even this moment towards the end were his “friend” (which he knew for like 2 episodes or so) died and all of the sudden he is super sad and grown up and has long hair... but then later its back to normal. This whole scene was so idiotic.
Thirdly, the world building is bad. I said it in my review. The mafia doesnt know what nen is. I mean the whole concept of nen seemed to be shoe-horned in anyways after like 40 episodes because before, nooone cared or mentioned it. Killuas father didnt even train his son in it. Then we dont even know what a hunter is and does and assassins are aparently famous people who can endure a lot of pain.
And lastly the whole writing is bad. I mean its been more than 10 years, so I cant give you so many examples, but things that come to mind are: When the ant queen died and the main characters, all of the sudden feel sorry for her and cry (even though she was responsible for the murder of thousands of people)... conveniently they removed the human skulls the queen was sitting on, just for this scene. Then there is the previously mentioned scene were Gon got super upset about the death of a character he barely knew. In general the last arc had so much talking towards the end and so little fighting. And it felt like all the talking was basically irrelevant tactics. This was just the last arc.. there are some additional examples of badly written moments in my review.
So thats basically sums it up. I think there was no aspect of the show I enjoyed. The music, for example was also underwhelming and I found it offensive that they used a masterpiece like Lacrimosa as background for one of their shitty story conclusions (in the mafia arc I believe).
No worries at all. I appreciate it. Hope you’ve been doing well ~
I would NEVER make the bad faith argument of the ecchi and Rudeus's earlier disgusting behavior as a morality play. We saw he suffered trauma in high school that caused him to become a shut-in. His situation was made worse because his family and friends never knew how to help. The thing about trauma is, it doesn't just give the person a fear of something forever. It damages them irrevocably, makes them reluctant to trust, and can even make them a worse person. A lot of people who haven't truly experienced trauma are fortunate in their ignorance, but it is also a harmful ignorance. Rudeus is an example of someone who suffered and became worse for it. You don't discard your trauma just because you get another chance at life.
Something you have to consider is where Rudeus is coming from at the start of season 2. He thought him and Eris would be together indefinitely, doing their thing and making a life for themselves. The morning after, she writes him a "Dear John" letter basically telling him she's leaving. For Rudeus, who was bullied and traumatized, and then abandoned by everyone he knew in his past life, that is worse than a knife in the back. It's a re-experiencing of a trauma he thought was behind him. Instead, it came back in full force, and like before, he withdrew into himself. It was only after a small period of time that he decided doing something was better than repeating the same behaviors that had caused him so much pain before.
Rudeus was initially setting up to save his mother, but was eventually pushed towards the magic school instead. However reluctant he might have been, it at least made sense from everyone's perspective that not only lacking in resources, but also the means to launch a search for his mother. Not only that, but around that time, also, he was suffering from depression. As a side note, erectile dysfunction is a common symptom among men suffering from depression. Rudeus wasn't fully over his re-experienced trauma of being both sexually exploited, and being abandoned. For him, the fact that it was someone he was close to on both parts was a double whammy.
I think a lot of people overlook the more prominent details related to why Rudeus is how he is, and it's not helped by youtubers like Gigguk and such who make dumb jokes about a serious topic like how men handle depression, or the traits that persons who suffered abuse and trauma display. For Rudeus, curing his erectile dysfunction wasn't simply sexual gratification. When someone suffers trauma, a common trait is a sense of powerlessness. Persons who have suffered trauma are often inclined to attempt to assert dominance over themselves and/or their environment through a variety of methods. Rudeus NEEDS to fix his erectile dysfunction BECAUSE he needs to re-take that power that Eris's actions stole from him.
I think another part of MT is how nuanced the characters are. Eris is not at fault for needing to go on her own. Anyone in her position would feel as lost as she does, and need time to re-discover themselves. At the same time, Rudy's trauma is not her fault, but it is a result of her decision. Neither are terrible for what they did before or after.
Also, this got lengthier than I wanted. lol
