On my way home with my flag at half-mast I spy an old friend who waits in the dark We walk together, she lights up the path My friend the moon and I Walk through the door with my ebb at a low Sarah is sleeping in her winter coat Come tiptoe outside and we'll share a smoke My friend the moon and I Head back inside and unscrew this cheap wine Silently toast to this moment in time She casts a shadow through Venetian blinds My friend the moon and I Trade our troubles for glee And we're finally free It's our mission to build ammunition And guard us from what we will be The rooster crows with his usual aplomb Sarah embraces that wretched old sun We dream together 'til evening come My friend the moon and I

Well you live free in the dream world But you're waking up with your tail curled You're on borrowed time So find a reason to get up There aren't too many truffles left to find And the world tells you to toughen up your rind So you thumb your nose to the morning breath Pull a Jerry Lee on the cousin of death And get in the groove The circadian rhythm The pillow is a paradise of hay So close your eyes, get spirited away Wallow in the weight of what is wrong Can't finish a song Dream of the day when you stood tall At your birthday ball Oh Ricky, goodnight Oh Ricky, alright Mary, Mark and Luke and me Made some paper mache and we built a tree And the petals dropped some pearls of pure wisdom And beneath the roots some truffles could be found Takes a runt like you to work this fallow ground Wallow in the weight of what is wrong Can't finish a song Dream of the day when you stood tall At your birthday ball Oh Ricky, goodnight Oh Ricky, alright Oh Ricky, goodnight Oh Ricky, alright Wallow in the weight of what is wrong Can't finish a song Dream of the day when you stood tall

Shady Grove 04:15
That was the year that we made lemonade Poisoned the fruit and lay back in the shade And as the sun headed west You got some things off your chest About the boy you liked best You flew on home, I stopped forcing a smile Ran through the gate and hopped over the stile Followed the rope-swing ravine Through where the beech trees did lean Somewhere I wouldn't be seen Through the trees I dove To that shady grove I looked around, there was nobody there Felt for the book you and me used to share Left by some older kids Who never came back for it Shadows fell so I started a fire So all the images I could admire Conjured your face, felt no shame And as I whispered your name Held the page over the flame Ashes on the stove In my shady grove

Emily 03:02
My old friend how've you been Would you care to let me in How's that Dan-electro boy How's your sister up in Troy Does she still have scarlet lips Lips that launched the thousand ships Ships that sailed the endless sea For the one called Emily Summer 1958 And a bolt from heaven's gate Had us shaking in our shoes Fender Twin and Persian blues Well we took those gifts and ran Formed a band where no one sang And a special gift for me Was a girl called Emily Surf guitar was at death's door In the spring of sixty four On a beach with cringing sands Strangers laughed when we held hands Hail the hunchback and his queen It's not even Halloween How she blushed and set me free Fare thee well oh Emily All those English blues rock bands Flogging records to our fans They know nothing of what's cool And those clowns from Liverpool I won't listen to their band I just want to hold her hand

All Hail 02:41
Can you hear a whistle At the window They must know My baby's due tomorrow Oh my friends the other day Felt him kick and squirm they say I suspect they did not feel these things It must have been the beating of his wings Patter pitter patter at the window Whispers that my angel will rekindle The faith that man has buried deep The open arms, the flock of sheep My water broke as rain turned into hail The midwife fainted when she saw the tail …and hooves

When I was younger my dad he was mean He said, son you're the ugliest thing I have seen I'll eat my hat son, if you ever meet A lady who don't run and hide down the street Boy I ain't tryn'a treat you like a fool But you got to understand life can be cruel You asked me what's up with your mama's hair Well there ain't no mirrors into which she can stare If you insist on me tellin' you why It's coz they all smashed when you walked on by Me and my daddy went down on the lake With bread for the geese and their young'uns to take Daddy went skating, I stayed on the bank My body too twisted and deformed and lank I caught my reflection there in the ice Well it was the worst moment in my life The ice did crack and my dad, he did drown And there I decided to follow him down

Magic Beans 03:37
Unsinkable so won't you bring your baby grand aboard the boat Audition in the shipyard, if it's chilly don't forget your coat Sparky's all but given up till his piano comes alive They do their thing and when the fun is over there's nowhere to hide The weaver sets the king up for a fall Now he isn't wearing anything at all They dance around the board these figurines The world is all a hill of magic beans The anvil worker tickles yet another girl he's such a gent Old Cassanova ends up on the fire, it's no accident And Carny Jack and Lucky head to town to get some iron shoes For a southern journey in the morning and a maiden cruise Open up, we need your iron and nails I have to reach that ship before she sails Well it's not your turn to turn to smithereens The world is all a hill of magic beans They dance around the board these figurines The world is all a hill of magic beans

Patio 03:14
You see a little squirrel peeping through the kitchen window Perched on the edge of the rotten wooden table That was left in the rain and forgotten Now it's winter on the patio Now your house is warm and your house is dry You'll haunt this house 'til the day you die No one said you'd have company So you pull a silly face like you'd tease a little baby Intending your new friend to flee to where it's safe and shady When the smoke alarm sounds And you have to take your dinner to the patio Now your house is warm and your house will fry You'll live outside 'til the day you die No one said you'd have company Oh, but ain't you glad you have company?

Souvenirs 02:22
Can't decide what to throw away I guess I'll keep it all So many memories cling to the posters Of pop-stars on the walls Old cartoons and burst balloons Your favourite broken toy Reading old magazines Living the dream Drowning in a sea of joy Knelt before plastic evergreens And shabby old Christmas cards I never bothered, I felt kinda smothered Oh please send my regards This old pen, it holds no ink But it helps me reminisce I have awoken, all thanks to the totem The souvenir that signed your kiss Can't decide what to throw away I guess I'll keep it all

It's a warm welcome feeling, appears without warning And soothes you and sends you away She spreads her wings as you oil the hinge And the eagle descends on the snake The past is confusing Our teeth such a bad thing The future is opening its jaws Natural history, down on all fours I know the flesh is the truth Can you say this to me straight-faced and sure You are not the strangest beast in the zoo It was never the plan to go off in her hand But she makes you so happy I know The pinball may tilt The sunflowers may wilt And she'll leave you out here in the snow now It's coz I'm so smitten That my hand's been bitten I don't wanna play anymore Natural history, down on all fours I know the flesh is the truth Can you say this to me, straight-faced and sure You are not the strangest beast in the zoo

Snowglobe 04:24
We tried reciting all the songs we'd sung Before we got so overhung We put our clothes on and we left your house You said I'd always be your little mouse Well I guess I never heard a word Distracted by that single bird Black and white with just a hint of blue We headed north along the avenue The rumble of the traffic shook the trees And the branches scattered snow around our knees And our cherry reds I'll spend these days with you
We'll try and see it through 'Til someone knocks the snow globe from the stand One sunny day We'll walk away Rivers never crossed Glaciated moss Of a winter wonderland I heard it's raining in Pompeii And that's how it's gonna stay You wanted Christmas every day Behind her painted smile My lily of the Nile I'll spend this time with you We'll try and talk it through 'Til someone knocks the snow globe from the stand Or finds that fabled tree That once belonged to you and me And when it comes our turn Ashes in the urn Shaken by God's hand In a winter wonderland
