Ace Hardware was recently named one of the nation's top brands for customer service, ranking No. 36 overall on the Forbes 2026 Best Customer Service List. This ranking places Ace in the top 2% of more than 3,500 companies evaluated and the highest-ranked hardware and home improvement retailer on the list. "To be recognized by Forbes and, more importantly, by customers themselves, is a powerful validation of what makes Ace different," says Kim Lefko, chief marketing officer at Ace Hardware. "Being helpful isn't just a promise; it's our standard. Our red-vested heroes are trusted neighbors in the communities they serve, and this recognition reflects the pride they take in that role." The annual Forbes list is based entirely on consumer feedback and collects data over a 12-month period from over 158,000 customers. Upstreet Ace announces it plans to close its downtown Indiana store on Jan. 30. * by PATRICK CLOONAN [email protected] * Jan 1, 2026 updated 7 hrs ago. "It will be a real shot in the arm for downtown," Indiana Mayor William B. Simmons said in September 2022 about Upstreet Ace Hardware, which had its soft opening on June 27, 2023, at 631 Philadelphia St. However, in a release issued Wednesday, owners Frank and Hastie Kinter and Manager Matt Jackson announced that Upstreet Ace Hardware was closing, with a tentative final day of business set for Jan. 30. As noted in their release, the principals of the Ace Hardware franchise said their intention was to serve as a local anchor for the downtown Indiana business district. "The decision to close follows a challenging period in which actual sales significantly trailed the initial projections provided by Ace Hardware Corporate," the news release went on. The coup de grace, however, appeared to be the coming of Rural King 2.4 miles away in Indiana Mall, on Aug. 15, 2025. Touting free made-in-house popcorn and products ranging from livestock feed and workwear to home goods and hunting gear, owners of the 11th Pennsylvania location in that chain said it was "cementing Rural King as a convenient one-stop shop for the community." Rural King officials said they were bringing more than 100 new jobs to the location in Indiana Mall - or more than five times the Upstreet Ace payroll. "These financial pressures, compounded by the recent arrival of new competition in the area, Rural King, led to this difficult family decision," the Kinter family said in its news release. Jackson, the Kinters' son-in-law, co-owned the store with his wife, Kaiti, and her parents, in a building whose history as a retail destination included being a one-time Sears location. Upstreet Ace received a neighbor in August, when Luxenberg Jewelers celebrated the opening of a new Philadelphia Street outlet, next door to the hardware store and down the street from where plumbing problems forced it out of its original downtown location. Upstreet Ace opened with a capacity crew of 14, and "everything has gone well," Matt Jackson said. "We sold a couple of grills. We mixed our first couple buckets of paint." It also had a lot going for it, as a dealer for Stihl, German manufacturer of chainsaws and other handheld power equipment, and partners including longtime Philadelphia Street businessman Evan Strittmatter and his mother, Cindy Konkol Strittmatter. "Because we wanted to take care of our clients that have supported us over the years, we were lucky enough to begin a partnership with the new Upstreet Ace Hardware that will be opening soon," the Strittmatters said in May 2023. "Upstreet Ace's goal was to provide the community with a locally-run hardware store and personalized assistance for every customer," the local Ace franchise owners said. "While we are disappointed that we cannot continue as a fixture of downtown Indiana, we are incredibly proud of what we achieved." The owners said in concluding their news release, "Upstreet Ace Hardware achieved the highest customer satisfaction ranking in Ace's Western Pennsylvania District, which comprises 40 stores. "This success is a testament to the hard work of a dedicated team of employees and the support of a loyal customer base."

Ace Hardware ranks #5 on Franchise Times Top 400 list for fourth consecutive year. * By Ace Hardware Corporation * Oct 8, 2025 * 0 * 2 min to read Hardware Retail Leader Retains Its Top 5 Position Thanks to Continued Store Growth and Strong Performance OAK BROOK, Ill., Oct. 8, 2025 /PRNewswire/ - Ace Hardware, the world's largest hardware cooperative, has earned the #5 ranking on the Franchise Times Top 400 list for the fourth year in a row. The Franchise Times Top 400 is an exclusive annual ranking of the largest U.S.-based franchise systems by global systemwide sales. Ace Hardware once again joins the top five alongside iconic global brands McDonald's, 7-Eleven, KFC, and Burger King, respectively. Ace Hardware's steady performance and consistent growth helped secure its place among the industry's top corporations. In 2024, Ace posted $23.5 billion in retail sales, driven by strong same-store sales and new store development. The cooperative added 230 new stores, bringing its global total to more than 5,900. Over the past five years, Ace has opened more than 1,000 new stores worldwide. "Ace is proud to be recognized once again by Franchise Times as one of the top five franchises, and as the #1 ranked retailer, on this respected list," said Andy Enright, Senior Vice President of Retail Strategy and Operations at Ace Hardware Corporation. "Our continued success is fueled by the strength of our store owners, who are deeply rooted in their communities and committed to delivering helpful service every day." Ace Hardware operates as a retailer-owned cooperative, where independent owners both operate their stores and hold ownership in the cooperative itself.
