make clean fails if object files are in subdirectory
Open Source C & C++ IDE for Windows

It is related to the previous bug report
1077831Clean target uses non-native tool
I installed the 4.9.9.1 exe (full) everything was OK. I
rebuilded a project
and everithing was OK.
Then I installed the latest (08 dec 2004) devcpp.exe from
castleofpoland.
Rebuilding the project (rebuild all) I go an error related
to the clean target (now is RM = -del /f/q). The error is
[clean] Error 1 (Ignored)
and the compilation fails.
It was better before... :-))))
Now I switched back to the original devcpp.exe.

Max.

compilation does not fail. it says it's (Ignored), so
dev-c++ displays it, but the compilation is actually
successful. Please confirm

Dear specu,
No the compilation stops.
Please note the no files have been changed but
the "rebuild all" should push for a complete re-compilation
of everything.
If I change one source file (.c) only the "rebuild all"
compiles the new file
only and send the warning, building the exe.
I am a little bit confused by the new behaviour.
I have to admit that the previous behaviour was perfect and
I cannot understand the reason for changing it. It worked
perfectly.
Thank you for the attention

the reason for change is that you had to have rm which is
not native to windows. previously we included it as part of
binutils, there were also ideas to make a separate devpaks
out of it etc etc.
could you please include a zip of the project here?

Dear Specu
The problem appears using all my projects. It seems
impossible to attach
a file in the current followup. I opened another bug report
with the same
subject + attach in which I attached tha zip file.
I think it is related to the configuration. I am used to put all
my objects and executables in the "object" directory. After
some trials
I am pretty sure that this configuration can show the bug.
I you put all the objects and the executable in the main dir
(the dir in which
the .dev exist) the problem disappers.
***My Humble Opinion Flag ON
I think that the reason that pushed this change is academic.
OK rm is
not a windows facility. But also devcpp.exe is not a windows
facility.
Simply add (in a proper location) rm in the devc++
distribution (like devcpp.exe).
And everybody are happy :-)))

I bet the problem is simpler.
while rm accepts
rm objects/somefile.o
del needs backslash
del objects\somefile.o
and fails with forward slash.
you probably can see that in your compile log.

attaching the example

so if you look at compiler log:
--
[...]
Executing make clean
del /f/q object/main.o object/A.o object/B.o
object/AAAAAAAAAA.o object/BBBBBBBBBBBBB.o
object/DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.o object/EEEEEEEEEE.o
object/FFFFFFFFF.o object/GGGGGGG.o object/HHHHHHHH.o
object/example.exe
Invalid switch - "main.o".
make.exe: [clean] Error 1 (ignored)
make.exe: Nothing to be done for `all'.
Execution terminated
that means that in fact make did not fail. simply del didn't
delete the binaries and make didn't have anything to do, so
it terminated with success.

Dear Specu
OK .. but now? :-)))
The makefile is automatically generated by devcpp. I think
that if devcpp is
going to use del, the makefile generator should be changed
to use backslashes.
Anyway thank you very much for your attention.

I rolled back to using rm.
