gdb configure core dumps

Guys:

I'm trying to configure gdb-4.18 on a fresh install of RH6.1, and it isn't
working.

It seems as though no matter what I supply for arguments to configure
(including no arguments at all), I always get back the same thing as if I had
typed --help, and a core file appears in the directory.

Any ideas?  I'm stumped...
