The rename to sources.redhat.com
Current status:
If you find any problems not listed here, please let us know so we can update this page.
Known to work: ssh, web, anonymous CVS (via pserver), email, cvsweb.
Known to need changes and not yet migrated: kerberos (you can log
into sources.redhat.com with krlogin, we just can't change the reverse
DNS without coordination), htdig (it seems to work but returns
sourceware.cygnus.com in its
results. Not sure if there are other symptoms). Until it is done,
these services will continue to work using sourceware.cygnus.com.
Not tested yet: faq-o-matic, gnats, rsync, others.
Nit: Don't seem to have an MX record for sources.redhat.com.
Email can function with just an A record but it means mailers have to
look up and fail for the MX record first, so it would be nice to fix
this. Then again, sourceware.cygnus.com doesn't seem to have had one
either.
Another nit: need to rename sourceware-announce.
Background: sourceware needs a new name - here are some criteria
- does not infringe on anyone's trademark (like sourceware does)
- easy to remember
- easy to pronounce and spell
- reflect Red Hat's involvement/support
- any other suggested criteria?
The process (mostly historical)
- Don't combine the rename with other activities such as hardware or
software upgrades. Let's bite off something we can chew, get it done,
then look at whatever else we need to address.
- Make a list of suggested names.
Publicize this process to overseers, Red Hat internal lists, and other
public or company lists as desired (you, the reader, will need to help
with that last one).
- Try to reach a decision. The Powers That Be are thinking of just
conducting a vote (on the theory that it is largely a question of
preference), although we haven't decided for sure whether we plan a
more deliberate/structured thing.
People who want to be highly involved should make plans to participate
in the overseers mailing list (which is
probably the best place to campaign for your favorite name, if
desired).
- Implement the rename. This is a lot of work, in that the name
appears many places, but it is straightforward. Plan is to do it the
same way as egcs.cygnus.com -> gcc.gnu.org, with the old name working
for an extended period of time.
Tentative Finalists (historical)
- Sources.redhat.com (can be pronounced "sources.redhat").
Question: does a variation of "sources" make it sound like the site
contains all the source to Red Hat's products or something like
that?
LAST CALL: This is the proposed name, let us know now or forever hold your peace.
