"Having read this book and with it in hand, I could successfully design, implement, use, and administer a Mongo database. It covers enough material in enough detail to be almost a reference title, but it isn't. It provides a truly useful context of how the tools and techniques fit together to get things done.

One other thing I want to mention is that for a book with multiple authors, they have found a consistent and engaging "voice" to write in. This is invaluable in a book, particularly a technical one."

You Won’t Master MongoDB After This
Reviewed in Poland on December 26, 2025

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

It’s acceptable as a broad and shallow introduction to MongoDB, but nothing more. For example:

You’ll read what ACID means and see a short table related to read concerns, but you won’t learn the actual guarantees provided by each concern—let alone how they’re implemented.

You’ll find examples of connecting to MongoDB using a few different languages, yet there’s no explanation of the difference between SRV and standard connection strings, nor any discussion of how mongos fits into the picture.

The ESR rule is presented, but without explaining why the sort field must come before the range field in an index (why it is not just about cardinality?).

You’ll see a handful of query and aggregation examples, but they’re only brief glimpses. The book doesn’t help you understand when to use which approach, or even what operators are actually available.

One could argue that a book covering these topics thoroughly would be a thousand pages long. Maybe—but then it should be split into a few solid books rather than compressed into one mediocre one. High Performance MongoDB, from the same publisher, seems to take that approach more successfully.

Overall, it’s not a bad book, but I expected much more from an official MongoDB book with “Mastering” in the title.
