About the authors

My career has focused on how to teach reading effectively, and I currently teach and conduct research at the University of Virginia. This is a broad focus, I confess, and it has led to books on a range of related topics, including assessment, small-group instruction, content area reading, technology applications, and literacy coaching. My coauthors include Sharon Walpole (University of Delaware), Richard Robinson (University of Missouri), and Kay Stahl (New York University).

I am a literacy consultant and author who focuses on translating literacy research into practice. Formerly, I was a clinical professor at New York University, where I taught graduate courses and served as Director of the NYU Literacy Clinic. Before entering academia, I taught in diverse public elementary and middle school classrooms for over 25 years. Without children of my own, I have dedicated my life to helping children become successful readers.
I specialize in reading acquisition, comprehension instruction, reading intervention, and literacy assessment. I am the coauthor of Assessment for Reading Instruction, Expanding Reading Comprehension in Grades 3-6 (available in 2022), Developing Reading Comprehension: Effective Instruction for All Children in Prek-2, Reading Assessment in an RTI Framework, and Reading Research at Work: Foundations of Effective Practice. Please share a review of my books. I appreciate the feedback of people who use the material in their classrooms.
Currently, I spend my time in schools partnering with educators as a consultant supporting their efforts to improve reading achievement, especially for students with reading difficulties. Working together, we all leave the experience as changed people…better readers, better teachers, and believing in new possibilities for ourselves and others.
