Review
Praise for Rock Your Literacy Block by Lindsay Kemeny
“An excellent book, unique among the many about teaching reading. Lindsay Kemeny, a highly effective and motivated teacher, brings us into her mind, as well as her classroom, to reveal how, exactly, to implement effective literacy instruction… so that you, too, can ‘rock your literacy block.’”
―LOUISA COOK MOATS, Ed.D., author of LETRS Professional Development and Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers
“Another outstanding book by Lindsay Kemeny! Once again, she draws from the science of reading to offer practical strategies for implementing evidence-based instruction. But she goes a step further by offering tips for carrying out whole- and small-group instruction, differentiating approaches, and scheduling across grade levels. A must-read for primary educators.”
―ELSA CÁRDENAS-HAGAN, Ed.D., President, Valley Speech Language and Learning Center; author of Literacy Foundations for English Learners
“Lindsay Kemeny ROCKs it with this practical resource that puts research front and center and translates it into evidence-based practices K–2 teachers can use right away. Not only does she lay out a complete literacy block schedule, but also― more importantly―unpacks the what, why, and how of each component within that schedule. Brilliant!”
―ANTONIO A. FIERRO, Ed.D., Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics, 95 Percent Group; original member of the LETRS national training cohort
“Rock Your Literacy Block comes from a place of deep understanding, experience, and wisdom. With the heart of a skilled teacher, Lindsay Kemeny provides a practical, instantly accessible guide steeped in what works from a research perspective and from what she lives, day in and day out.”
―LAURA STEWART, Chief Academic Officer, 95 Percent Group; author of The Courage to Lead
“This book is implementation science in action―by a teacher, for teachers. Lindsay shows how to embed literacy into every part of the day. We get an inside view into the purposeful planning―with clear schedules, effective pedagogy, and content-driven decision making. She makes the science-of-reading movement actionable and achievable.”
―MITCHELL BROOKINS, Ph.D., educational consultant, Brookins Consulting
“I hesitate to use the word balance in relation to reading instruction, but this book is the contemporary manifestation of what balance should look like: research evidence + practical experience + informed judgement, combining as the ‘secret sauce’ of teacher self-efficacy and student success.”
―PAMELA SNOW, Professor and Co-director, Science of Language and Reading (SOLAR), La Trobe University, Australia
“Lindsay Kemeny delivers yet again, this time opening the door to her classroom and welcoming us in! Chock-full of practical guidance, her book provides teachers with ways to meet the literacy needs of all students, efficiently and skillfully. An important resource for preservice and Inservice teachers alike!”
―SONIA CABELL, Ph.D., Professor, Florida Center for Reading Research, Florida State University; coauthor of Strive-for-Five Conversations
“A gift for educators! With clear explanations and actionable techniques, this book bridges the gap between theory and classroom practice, making evidence-based teaching accessible. It’s an incredible resource for teachers who are trying to streamline and maximize time in their schedule to best support the development of strong foundational literacy skills!”
―KATIE PACE MILES, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Brooklyn College, City University of New York; coauthor of Making Words Stick: A Four-Step Instructional Routine to Power Up Orthographic Mapping
“Lindsay Kemeny integrates structured literacy principles with evidence-based, classroom-proven strategies. Her perspective as a practicing educator lends authenticity rarely found in professional texts. This book is monumental for educators and leaders aligning instruction with research and advancing meaningful, measurable student outcomes.”
―SAMUEL GONZÁLEZ, Ed.D., Assistant Principal, Hatboro-Horsham School District
“Implementing new routines and systems can be challenging without a clear model. Kemeny’s text provides a vision by outlining the structure of the literacy block, describing each component, and providing behind-the-scenes tips. The practical and realistic examples offer educators a solid starting point for improving their system.”
―JAMEY PEAVLER, Ed.D., Assistant Professor and Program Facilitator, Graduate Reading Science Program, Mount St. Joseph University
