Review
"Behind every great website is the fundamentals – HTML and CSS. Ben Frain covers the basics both clearly and logically. This is a solid book for anyone to get up to speed on coding and design quickly."
--Rob Anthony O'Rourke, Owner of Fox Web School
"This book is perfect for beginners and professionals with years of experience."
--Mayk Brito, Senior Front-end Engineer and Educator at Rocketseat
About the Author
Ben Frain has been a web designer/developer since 1996. He is currently employed as a UI-UX Technical Lead at bet365. Before the web, he worked as an underrated (and modest) TV actor and technology journalist, having graduated from Salford University with a degree in Media and Performance. He has written four equally underrated (his opinion) screenplays and still harbors the (fading) belief he might sell one. Outside of work, he enjoys simple pleasures: playing indoor football while his body and wife still allow it and wrestling with his two sons.

This is THE BOOK that you want and need.
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2025If you want to learn HTML and CSS in a very easy to understand format THIS IS THE BEST BOOK to accomplish that goal. Every aspect is broken down so simply that you would have to intentionally not want to understand. It covers everything in detail and the pace is perfect. Other books start off nice and smooth and for some reason when you turn a few pages you are trying to figure out solutions as if you had been doing it for many years. This book is not like that at all. Do yourself a favor and by it today.

New to CSS or need to refresh, this is the book!
Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2023I found "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS" to be an exceptional resource for learning how to create responsive websites. The author's explanations are clear and concise, making even complex concepts easy to understand. The book is filled with practical examples and exercises that helped me to build my own responsive web pages with ease.
One of the things I appreciated most about this book is that it doesn't just cover the basics of responsive design; it goes into great detail about advanced techniques, such as creating fluid grids, using media queries effectively, and optimizing images for different devices. I also liked that the author provides best practices and real-world examples that help to reinforce the concepts covered in the book.
Overall, I highly recommend "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS" to anyone who wants to learn how to create responsive websites. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced web designer, this book has something to offer. The author's expertise and clear writing style make it a pleasure to read, and the exercises and examples ensure that you'll come away with practical skills that you can apply to your own web projects. So, it's definitely worth buying and reading!

Good, but not for the beginner. Missing context.
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2023I've been working with html and on and off for a couple of decades, but I never went in and studied the syntax and the rules from scratch. I just worked with front end design programs and would go into the back end code whenever I needed to to customize things. So I wanted to fill in some holes in my knowledge. While reading this book, I found myself having to look things up that the author just assumed that I would know- so I am not recommending this book to anyone who is a beginner or even an old school designer or someone who has knowledge of working with code but has not studied it from scratch.
There is also missing code to examples he gives in the book which took me a while to find on his website and to which seemed obvious to me that you would include in the examples.
Other than those few frustrations, I have consumed most of the data in the book and it read quite easily, and I have gained some valuable understanding in the way the two languages work together.
I also enjoyed the author's sense of humor.
Four out of Five stars.

Another crucially important book to add to my collection!
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2022For a bit of background, I'm a self-taught developer with 5+ years experience. I have not used HTML nor CSS since HTML5/CSS1.1, so I was coming into this mostly blind.
Mr. Frain does an amazing job explaining why responsive design is so important through demonstrating every step of the process. It thoroughly details topics such as media queries, forms, responsive images, SVG and so much more. Everything you need to bring you up to speed on current practices are all wonderfully laid out and easily referenced.
I originally had the ebook of this as a review copy but was so impressed that I knew I needed the physical in my collection. If you have any interest in web development, this is a must-have!

Comes with a pdf version of entire book!
Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2023At a glance, love the authors humor and teaching technique. The pdf is useful because it’s hard to type code with one hand while keeping the book open. Pdf version also allows me to keep my book in excellent condition because I love books. A good idea to save time and to understand some of the concepts here would be to have a working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and web dev tools to console.log cool stuff along with using a text editor like Virtual Studio code with cool extensions to make life easier. Let’s face it though if your looking at this book you probably already have these fundamentals in your tool box. I did a course on IT prior and am enrolled in a front end web development course. Enjoy, and buy with confidence! Welcome to the community of aspiring or already computer programmers!

Clear, easy to follow writing teaches the fundamentals of responsive web design.
Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2025This is the book I needed, right when I needed it.
My HTML skills had atrophied and I need to write web pages that were responsive. This clearly written book allowed me to raise my skills and pull off the assignment with little fuss. I have not read the entire book yet, but it's a keeper. I have no qualms about recommending it.

Pixel Perfection5 out of 5 starsGo from zero HTML experience, to controlling layouts within pixels with HTML5 and CSS
Reviewed in Australia on July 4, 2023Ask any graphic designer what they want most from digital projects and they will probably tell you: 'I want control over layouts, fonts and images to look exactly like my layouts'. This book delivers a great amount of information to help get you there.
This delivers a solid foundation in HTML5 and CSS, for prospective front end web designers/developers, and should be used as a reference manual - not a step by step how-to-guide.
All I need now is a reference book on javascript and I'm good to go!
