Cloud Strategy: A Decision-based Approach to Successful Cloud Migration (Architect Elevator Book Series)
Kaufoptionen und Plus-Produkte
“Strategy is the difference between making a wish and making it come true.”
Most books on cloud computing either stay at a very high level, offer simplistic recipes, or dive deep into vendor-specific product details. This book helps you fill the large gap in between: aligning technology change with organizational transformation, making architectural decisions, and communicating trade-offs to diverse stakeholders. The book complements structured decision models with real-life anecdotes, both harvested from half a decade of defining and implementing cloud strategies for major organizations.
Today’s enterprises need a more nuanced strategy than simply proclaiming "cloud first!" A strategy isn't something you can copy-paste from a recipe book or from another organization because diverse starting points, objectives, and constraints imply different choices and trade-offs. So, rather than offering simplistic “3-step-recipes”, this book guides you towards your own strategy, helping you ask the right questions and connecting the dots between the many available technologies and your business drivers. You’ll learn why the cloud lives in the first derivative, how to overcome past constraints, how to organize for successful cloud migrations, the trade-offs of hybrid and multi-cloud architectures, designing cloud-native applications, and optimizing for cost-efficient and resilient operations.
Being free of jargon and product pitches, this book is a valuable guide for:
- Enterprise and cloud architects who are tasked with defining and communicating a credible cloud strategy
- Consultants and advisors who rely on evocative decision models to guide their clients’ cloud journey
- IT executives who want to harvest the full benefits of cloud computing
- Business executives who align organizational changes with the technical transformation

Über die Autoren

Jean-François, aka JFL, is a senior solutions architect with AWS. After a decade developing software for financial markets, he followed the shift of collective excitement to SRE and DevOps and never looked back. He is a strong believer that you can’t take enlightened enterprise decisions if you are too far away from the engine room.

Gregor Hohpe advises CTOs and technology leaders in the transformation of both their organization and technology platform. Riding the Architect Elevator from the engine room to the penthouse, he assures that corporate strategy connects with the technical implementation and vice versa.
Gregor has served as Smart Nation Fellow to the Singapore government, as technical director in Google Cloud’s Office of the CTO, and as Chief Architect at Allianz SE, where he oversaw the architecture of a global data center consolidation and deployed the first private cloud software delivery platform.
Gregor is a widely recognized thought leader on asynchronous messaging and service-oriented architectures. He co-authored the seminal book 'Enterprise Integration Patterns' (Addison-Wesley, 2004), followed by "Integration Patterns" and "Enterprise Solution Patterns", both published by Microsoft Press. He was nominated a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) Solution Architect for his contributions to the developer community and recognized as an active member of the patterns community by the Hillside Group. In 2005, Joel Spolsky selected Gregor's article 'Starbucks Does Not Use Two-phase Commit' for his 'Best Software Writing' (APress).
Gregor speaks regularly at technical conferences around the world. He likes to cut through the hype surrounding service-oriented architectures and captures nuggets of advice in the form of design patterns that can help developers avoid costly mistakes. Find out more about his work at eaipatterns.com and architectelevator.com

Tahir Hashmi has developed large-scale distributed applications at internet businesses serving more than 100 million users, like Flipkart, Zynga, Yahoo, and most recently, Tokopedia, where he now leads the technology strategy as vice president and technical fellow. His mission is to make distributed cloud computing as simple as writing a program on the laptop.

Michele is Architecture and Technology Director at Objectway for Financial Advisory in Italy. After starting his career in a garage building planning software for telcos, he held technical and managerial roles at Allianz Technology, UnipolSai and IBM and worked as senior advisor for FIS markets at Imola Informatica. He still loves to build things in the engine room and counters architecture dogmatism with his tag line Architecture must be Useful not only True.
