Competitive Exam Experience as an Engineering Student

Introduction: Hi everyone! I'm a third-year engineering student at Anna University. Recently, I took the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam with the motive of getting into PSUs for the academic year of 2025. My journey through preparation, the exam day, and post-exam reflections was quite an adventure, filled with highs, lows, and a few laughs. Here's my story.

Preparation Phase Study Materials and Resources: I used standard textbooks like "Signals and Systems" by Oppenheim and "Digital Design" by Morris Mano. But let's be real—YouTube was my best friend. Channels like NPTEL and a certain enthusiastic professor who explains Fourier Transforms with dance moves were my go-to resources.

Study Schedule and Strategy: My study schedule was like an on-again, off-again relationship. I started with a rigorous 4-5 hours daily, but Netflix has a way of turning an engineering student into a binge-watching expert. Eventually, I found balance by studying intensely during weekdays and rewarding myself with a movie night on weekends.

Coaching Classes and Online Resources: I joined a local coaching class which was great, except for the occasional daydreaming during lectures about how I'd solve world hunger with differential equations. Online forums were incredibly helpful too. I even made a friend from another city who, like me, swore by late-night study marathons fueled by coffee and memes. I enjoyed it too because I'm a person who admires the journey more than the destination.

Exam Day Experience: Exam Environment: On exam day (2nd week of Feb 2024), I felt like I was entering a high-security vault. Metal detectors, identity checks, and a stern-looking invigilator who could rival a bouncer at a nightclub set the scene. The tension was palpable, but a fellow examinee lightened the mood by whispering, "May the force be with us," as we walked in.

The exam had three sections: General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and Core Subject Questions. One question asked us to solve an integral that looked like it belonged on an ancient scroll. Lol! During the test, I half-expected Spiderman to swing in and offer me a hint.

Time Management and Problem-Solving Strategies: I started with the General Aptitude section to build confidence. It was going well until I hit a tricky puzzle that had me scratching my head like a cartoon character. I tackled it by visualizing the problem as a game level—sometimes you need a fresh perspective to find the hidden door.

Post-Exam Reflection Initial Reactions: Right after the exam, I felt like I had run a marathon. A mix of relief and "Did I really answer B for that question?" I overheard someone say they'd celebrate with a pizza, and I thought, "Great idea! But maybe a nap first."

Insights Gained: I realized the importance of time management and practicing with mock tests. Also, having a support group of friends who understand the struggle is invaluable. We even had a post-exam meme fest to de-stress.

What I Would Do Differently: Next time, I'd focus more on subjects I found challenging and engage more in study groups. Also, less procrastination—those last-minute cramming types of Questions and Sections:sions are not for the faint-hearted.

Conclusion and Tips Overall Experience: Preparing for the GATE exam was like riding a roller coaster—thrilling, nerve-wracking, and ultimately rewarding. It strengthened my engineering concepts and time management skills while providing a treasure trove of memories.

Actionable Tips for Future Candidates:

  1. Start Early: Create a detailed study plan and stick to it as much as possible.
  2. Mix It Up: Use a combination of textbooks, online resources, and coaching classes.
  3. Practice: Regularly take mock tests to gauge your preparation.
  4. Balance: Find time to relax and reward yourself—burnout helps no one.
  5. Stay Positive: Keep a positive mindset and remember, every great journey has its ups and downs.

Good luck to everyone preparing for their exams! And remember, no matter how tough it gets, there's always light at the end of the tunnel—and maybe a hangout with your fellow buddy.
