Power in Mathematics

Last Updated : 18 Sep, 2026

A power is an expression that shows repeated multiplication of the same number. For example:

43 = 4 × 4 × 4; Here, 43 is the power.

It is read as "4 to the power of 3" or "4 cubed".

Some interesting facts about Power:

  1. If the exponent is 1, the value is the number itself. For example, 51 = 5.
  2. If the exponent is 0, the value is 1 (for any non-zero number). For example, 50 = 1.
  3. Exponents make it easier to write repeated multiplication. For example, 5 × 5 × 5 can be written as 53.
  4. A negative exponent represents the reciprocal of the number raised to the corresponding positive exponent. For example, 5^{−1} = \frac{1}{5} = 0.2.
  5. When multiplying powers with the same base, their exponents are added. For example, 2 × 2 = 25.
