PreTrained Models in Natural Language Processing (NLP)

Last Updated : 8 Oct, 2026

Pretrained models are deep learning models trained on large amounts of data that can be adapted to specific NLP tasks. They help reduce the time, data and computational resources required to build models from scratch.

1. BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers)

  • BERT is a Transformer-based language representation model developed by Google.
  • Processes text bidirectionally, allowing it to use both left and right context when understanding a token.
  • Pretrained on large text datasets and can be fine-tuned for tasks such as text classification, question answering and named entity recognition.
  • Primarily an encoder-based model designed for understanding text.

2. RoBERTa (Robustly Optimized BERT Pretraining Approach)

  • RoBERTa is an optimized variant of BERT developed by researchers at Facebook AI.
  • Uses improved pretraining strategies and is trained on larger amounts of text than the original BERT.
  • Removes BERT's Next Sentence Prediction objective and uses dynamic masking during training.
  • Can be fine-tuned for tasks such as text classification, sentiment analysis and question answering.

3. DistilBERT

  • DistilBERT is a smaller and faster version of BERT developed by Hugging Face.
  • Uses knowledge distillation to transfer knowledge from a larger BERT model to a smaller model.
  • It has fewer parameters and requires less computational resources than BERT.
  • DistilBERT is useful for applications where faster inference and lower resource usage are important.

4. ALBERT (A Lite BERT)

  • ALBERT is a lightweight variant of BERT designed to reduce the number of model parameters.
  • It uses parameter sharing and factorized embedding parameterization to make the model more efficient.
  • Retains the Transformer encoder architecture while reducing memory requirements.
  • It can be used for tasks such as text classification, question answering and language understanding.

5. ELECTRA (Efficiently Learning an Encoder that Classifies Token Replacements Accurately)

  • ELECTRA is a Transformer-based model designed for more efficient pretraining.
  • Instead of predicting masked tokens directly, it learns to distinguish original tokens from tokens replaced by a generator.
  • This replaced-token detection approach allows ELECTRA to learn from more tokens during pretraining.
  • It can be fine-tuned for various language understanding tasks.

6. DeBERTa (Decoding-enhanced BERT with Disentangled Attention)

  • DeBERTa is a Transformer-based model that improves upon BERT and RoBERTa.
  • It uses disentangled attention to separately represent the content and position of tokens.
  • It also uses an enhanced mask decoder to improve the modeling of token positions.
  • DeBERTa can be used for tasks such as text classification, natural language inference and question answering.

7. GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer)

  • It is a family of Transformer-based language models developed by OpenAI.
  • Uses a decoder-based architecture that processes text from left to right and predicts the next token.
  • GPT models are pretrained on large text datasets to learn language patterns and generate text.
  • They can be adapted for tasks such as text generation, summarization, question answering and dialogue.

8. GPT-2 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer 2)

  • It is a large-scale language model developed by OpenAI as a successor to the original GPT.
  • Trained on a large collection of web text using a next-token prediction objective.
  • Can generate coherent text based on a given prompt.
  • Can also be fine-tuned for tasks such as text classification and other NLP applications.
