Veronica has selected Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros as our June pick.

Let us know what you think about the selection

Seth | 796 comments Cool! Had figured I'd read it since it came to my notice a week or so ago. Looks like A Deadly Education plus dragons, which seems good to me.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Dragons! Cool!

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1904 comments For those that haven't liked the lack of organization within the individual discord channels, it was decided to try the "forum" feature within this months pick channel. Rob will see how this works out, and go from there. But I think it may be a nice combo.

There was talk of even trying to break it up by groups of chapters, like some other book clubs do. As well as the other discussion topics that come up.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I actually am not a fan of the way it’s setup but I’m sure I’m in the minority. I also don’t have the kind of free time that keeping up with discord requires. I am sad that it’s driving traffic from here though (easier to keep up with here).

I think it's a matter of what you're used to. I find discord far easier to keep up with.

Trike | 11300 comments Heh, Discord.

I assume we don’t have to read wings 1 through 3 to catch up.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I’ve been using discord for much longer than S&L has been using it, so I don’t think it’s a “used to” scenario but what it’s trying to do, which I think it isn’t well-suited for.

Back to the book pick...

Ooh we find out where Hogwarts' graduates go to College.

I'm joking, but it does sound like it may have been inspired by HP.

Not saying that's a bad thing. Like all picks, I will give it a fair go.

Clyde (wishamc) | 575 comments Sounds interesting. But, $15 for the ebook? Guess I'll wait a bit.
(Retiree on a limited budget. Gotta draw the line somewhere.)

If we're going to wildly free associate...my brain went to Pern and thought that we had Ramoth, Mnementh and Ruth, the three major dragons, and now the Fourth Wing.

message 14: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 1800 comments I know nothing about this book! The ebook is expensive and I didn’t like the audiobook sample I tried (I find American accents quite jarring in a high fantasy setting) so I’ve put in a hold for it at the library. There are two people ahead of me in the queue so I don’t know if I’ll get hold of it before the end of the month but we shall see!

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1661 comments Snagged the audio book. Hope to rip through it as my TBR pile is getting to lethal heights

The trick to this is just not looking at how long/high it is 😜

I’ve also grabbed kindle and audio versions and now I see it’s got a sequel out so if I like it, maybe have something to read after…

Same here, reading the blurb my first thought was 'Pern rip off'.

Yup, I thought Pern + His Majesty's Dragon.

John (Taloni) Taloni (johntaloni) | 5217 comments We need a musical! Maybe "Avenue P."

The internet is for Pern! The internet is for Pern! So start your books with Dragon hooks! For Pern, Pern, Pern!

Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1740 comments Alt pick of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight #1 in all its awful glory? Its a lot shorter and cheaper (we could read half the Pern books in the same time this months pick will take).

“Awful”? Bwah?

(Plus it was already a group read, maybe 8-10 years ago.)

It's not out yet.

It's showing a Nov 7, 2023 release date on Amazon.

Grab your egg, watch out for Thread, for Pern, Pern, Pern!

Misti (spookster5) | 549 comments I also got Pern vibes from this one. I do love books with dragons. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

This is what I get for not actually clicking on it when I saw it haha.

Trike | 11300 comments Listening to the audiobook and it sounds like the narrator has a cold. It’s very distracting and makes me want to constantly clear my throat.

I listened to the Audible sample and I didn’t like the narrator’s voice at all. A poor choice of reader imho. Totally put me off the audiobook.

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2672 comments Same here, I will have to find an alternative version. The audio is LEM material.

Dana Van Pelt (danalv) | 39 comments I somehow missed the June pick announcement but I will probably read this one. I’ve been reading The Dragonbone Chair and it has been slow going. For some reason it is taking too long for me to really start enjoying it. I read several reviews of Fourth Wing and it sounds like a mix of divergent and Harry Potter. I enjoyed both of those series so I will give it a try.
