It took me a couple of days after finishing this book to ask the question - Who the hell was Caliban? Is it a reference to Shakespeare's Tempest or am I missing a character?

HAH! Yep. I was wondering who the heck Caliban referred to as well. I kept expecting someone to at least reference the name...

Love the book though.

You assume a cover has something to do with the inside of a book.

Caliban in the Tempest is this horrible misshapen but humanoid monster. He's often pictured as impossibly strong and fast and is treated in the play as both monstrous physically and by disposition.

I guess "Proto-molecule's War" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Finished Caliban's War a couple days ago: loved it as much as Leviathan Wakes!

I liked caliban's war very much, but one of the later sections of the book was super abrupt.

I liked CALIBAN'S WAR better than LEVIATHAN WAKES. Also, Caliban is a moon orbiting Uranus, but I think it is in reference to Shakespeare as @Lindsay mentions.

Quick question for you guys. I am a little more than 50% through LW and I was wondering if the ending has a cliff hanger that will want to make me read Caliban's War as opposed to it being more of a stand alone book. I am interested in reading the book that came with the Kindle version of LW and I was hoping I wouldn't feel obligated to read Caliban's War.

Not at all. LW Can stand alone. It does leave a teaser at the end, but its not a cliffhanger. The 2nd book continues the story about a year after the 1st.

Just finished Caliban's War and loved it. And though I expected a Miller type cliffhanger from the start it still surprised me the way it happened. Is Holden going insane much like Miller did with his visions of Julie or was it somehow the real thing?

No. Miller was always aware that his imaginations of Julie were just that - (though I like to think there was an actual psychic link between the two). While I didn't get that vibe at the end with Holden and Miller.

I think after Eros, the link was established between Miller and Julie as thats when his "vision's" and disconnect from reality really start.

Thanks for the info on the Caliban reference! As I read I kept waiting for the meaning to be revealed. I like that its a more relatively obscure reference.

Just finished the book last night and enjoyed it quite a bit (more so than LW).

Slightly disappointed that this is missing the fantastic cover art of the Expanse series and that I can't get a dead tree copy...but otherwise for 3 dollars its nice to be able to jump back into the series while waiting for Abaddon's Gate.

If anyone is interested I noticed that the price of the Kindle version of Caliban's War has gone down to $7.99 from $9.99.

In Revelation - Abaddon(Destroyer) is an arch demon who opens the bottomless pit to release one of the end-time plagues. So an appropriate allusion to the protomolecule.

Leviathan was a large unidentified animal referred to in the book of Job - so has become part of popular culture to refer to anything HUGE. Though in the TV show Supernatural - Leviathans are something totally different that is unrelated to size or the animal referred to and I am unsure how they made the jump between the biblical Leviathan and the whatever they are in the show - just a side gripe.

I didn't know book 3 will be out in June. Looks like I will wait. Calibans War will probably go on sale then.

I find it funny that I did a Google search to find out if I missed who Caliban was, and it lead me here. Guess I should have just looked here first.

Cibola is one of either multiple names for the mythical South American city of gold, or one of multiple cities of gold, depending on your source.
