An estate plan is not something to put in place once and set aside. As life evolves—through marriage, children, liquidity events or new assets—your plan should evolve with it. At its foundation are four essential elements: a will, powers of attorney, beneficiary designations and advance medical directives. Watch the latest #FinancialPrinciples video with BNY Wealth’s Christopher Sauer, CFP® to explore the fundamentals of estate planning and learn why regular reviews with your advisory team remain essential. https://lnkd.in/eMDwzw_g

In the conversation, Alvina shares how planning early and regularly revisiting a financial plan can help individuals prepare for a retirement that may span several decades. Her biggest recommendation: shift the end goal. Market uncertainty tends to put families with significant wealth on the defensive. But the more productive response can be to treat volatility as a planning window. Consider these strategies: ▪️ Gift while valuations are compressed: Lower asset values mean a lower transfer-tax cost. You can move more with the same exemption, and any rebound occurs outside your taxable estate. ▪️ Convert to a Roth IRA: A conversion at depressed valuations carries a lower tax cost, and recovery compounds free from income tax. ▪️ Use trusts strategically: Rolling GRATs capture upside across multiple market windows. SLATs let a trust compound without tax drag as the grantor pays income tax from personal assets. ▪️ Make tax-loss harvesting an ongoing discipline: Harvesting losses during dislocations, while staying fully invested, can offset gains and even reduce taxable income from a Roth conversion. The goal in uncertain times is not to predict every market turn. It is to use volatility rather than fear it, maintaining optionality as circumstances evolve.
