From making masks to preparing for the Dominican Parade, young people celebrated their heritage while letting their creativity shine. Today is a big day for afterschool in New York City. COMPASS school-based programs are launching across the five boroughs as NYC delivers the largest expansion of afterschool in more than a decade. This year, COMPASS will grow to nearly 1,000 programs, expanding free afterschool opportunities for families and bringing new programs to communities across the city. Behind every program is a partnership: community-based organizations, schools, principals, youth development professionals, families, and City agencies working together to create safe, enriching places for young people after the school day ends. For some programs, today continues years of service and deep relationships in their communities. For others, it marks the beginning of a new school partnership. And as programs get underway, DYCD is working closely with providers and our City partners to support a strong launch and ensure every program has what it needs to fully serve young people and families. To our providers and partners across New York City: thank you for getting us to opening day. And most importantly, to our young people and families: these programs are for you. We hope this year brings new friendships, new discoveries, trusted adults, joyful experiences, and opportunities to explore what is possible. Families, we hope COMPASS gives you the confidence of knowing your children are safe, supported, and surrounded by people invested in their growth. Welcome to COMPASS. Small moments matter: Knowing what they are learning in school, talking about what they are reading, and building a reading routine at home.
