🇨🇭How does a country turn open source technology into a national strategy? At #MatrixConf2025, professor Matthias Stürmer shared Switzerland’s journey towards recognising open source software as a key enabler of digital sovereignty. 🌐 All government-developed software must be released as open source 🏛️ Government tenders now require open sourcing The Matrix.org Foundation open standard was highlighted as a driving example — also used at the Swiss Institut Public Sector Transformation (IPST) — while projects like Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS)’s openDesk (including Element as the chat component) are being trialled in Switzerland’s public administration. Switzerland’s approach shows how open standards and open source software are becoming central to digital sovereignty in Europe. 🇩🇪 How do you build and roll out a messaging platform for an entire nation’s public administration? At #MatrixConf2025, Kai A. Hiller from BWI GmbH shared the evolution of BundesMessenger — Germany’s sovereign public sector messenger, built on The Matrix.org Foundation open standard, and based on Element. 📱With a large focus on building simple, familiar, and user-focused messengers, the mobile apps are powered by Element X. BundesMessenger builds on the BwMessenger, originally launched within the German Armed Forces in 2020, to expand into the public administration.
