For seven months, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at 🏥 St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas was Leni Henrickson’s home. Three years later, she walked back through the hospital doors for a joyful reunion with the care team who once cared for her through some of her earliest and most critical days. Before Leni was born, she was diagnosed with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), a rare condition that can cause a baby’s abdominal organs to move into the chest and prevent the lungs from developing normally. According to the National Institutes of Health, CDH affects about 2.5 out of every 10,000 births. At just 6 days old, Leni underwent surgery to repair the hernia. What followed was a seven-month journey in the hospital’s NICU as her care team helped her gain the strength to breathe, eat and ultimately go home. That level of complex care is possible because St. David’s Medical Center is home to a Level IV NICU — the highest level of neonatal care — with specialized teams equipped to care for some of the most critically ill and medically complex newborns. For Leni’s mom, Sheryl, the expertise of that team was matched by the way they surrounded her family with support. “We just felt so supported and so cared for...we feel so blessed that she is where she is today, and I think I attribute a lot of that to the care that she received early on and the ongoing care that we still get today,” she said. HCA Healthcare nurse Jo Medina was just 8 years old when she felt called to care for others. After her younger brother was diagnosed with bone cancer, Jo spent much of her childhood alongside him in the hospital. She remembers the nurses who cared for her family and the way their compassion helped them feel seen, supported and important in an uncertain time. “I knew then that I wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to help people feel as important as they did for us,” Jo shares. Today, as a registered nurse at 🏥 Riverside Community Hospital in California, she carries those experiences with her as she cares for patients and families. “You have to give people hope. Advancements in blood cancer treatment continue to expand options for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other blood cancers. In a new American Medical Association article, Dr. Navneet Majhail, hematologist and physician-in-chief of blood cancers for HCA Healthcare’s Sarah Cannon Transplant and Cellular Therapy Network, shares what patients and caregivers should know about blood cancer from symptoms and diagnosis to specialized treatments and clinical trials. “A lot of clinical research and innovation is happening in this space, and many of these blood cancers are curable or controllable — and that's thanks to the advances we've had in the treatment options available,” said Dr. Majhail. Across HCA Healthcare’s 11 complex blood cancer programs, physicians, care teams and researchers bring together specialized care, including blood and marrow transplants, CAR T-cell therapy and clinical trials supported by the HCA Healthcare Research Institute and Sarah Cannon Research Institute. For HCA Healthcare patient Lane Buck, a “10%” tattoo is a permanent reminder of the day her life changed and the people who helped save it. Six years ago, Lane suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm and was rushed to 🏥 TriStar Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee, with a less than 10% chance of survival. During her recovery, Lane asked one of her ICU nurses to write down “10%.” She later had the number tattooed in the nurse’s handwriting. “The odds were stacked against me,” Lane said. “I now have a tattoo, in her handwriting, to remind me how very fortunate I was.” Each year, Lane returns to TriStar Summit to thank the caregivers who stood beside her through emergency treatment, months in the ICU and rehabilitation. She also visits the first responders and community members who helped her that day, bringing cookies and gratitude to the people who became part of her story. "Seeing Lane come back every year, healthy and thriving, is incredibly special. It’s a reminder of why we chose healthcare, to help people through difficult moments and hopefully see them go on to live full lives,” said Ashley Gasser, emergency room nurse at TriStar Summit Medical Center. When Haley Prosser went into cardiac arrest following the birth of her daughter at a hospital in Pratt, Kansas, she was resuscitated, and a CT scan revealed a saddle pulmonary embolism — a life-threatening blood clot blocking blood flow through her heart. She needed a higher level of specialized care and was transferred to HCA Healthcare’s 🏥 Wesley Healthcare in Wichita, Kansas. Before Haley arrived, Wesley Medical Center mobilized a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including critical care and interventional radiology. With Haley at risk of another cardiac arrest, the team determined that venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) could support her heart and circulation while they treated the underlying cause. The team acted immediately when Haley arrived and placed her on ECMO, providing circulatory support that stabilized her condition so they could safely perform a minimally invasive thrombectomy to remove the life-threatening clot. The next day, Haley came off ECMO, and just three days after arriving in Wichita, she went home to her family. Reflecting on the lifesaving care she received at Wesley Medical Center, Haley said, “I’m so grateful that we were in the right place at the right time with the right people.” Haley’s story shows why access to advanced, specialized care matters — especially when a patient’s condition changes suddenly and every minute counts.
