The bar lowered. The money spent on licences can now build the software. The post in the image is getting a lot of traction recently. I have seen it in many places. I agree with the first part, but not really with the second. Yes, every team can now build some subset of Jira functionality tailored to its own needs much faster. But I am sure they will not need 500 iterations to get there. Those 500 iterations happened because Jira had to satisfy the requirements of thousands of different companies and use cases. A company building software for itself has a much narrower problem to solve. Before AI coding tools, what kept companies from recreating their own internal tools was the economy of scale and the investment needed to build them. It was simply cheaper to pay the subscription and adjust the company to the tool. But the bar has lowered now. Skilled teams can recreate many of the tools they use much faster than they could only a few years ago. This is especially true for large enterprises. Their requirements are higher, but so are their software bills. The money they spend every year on licences can increasingly justify building full in-house solutions that fit their needs exactly. Of course, not for every type of software. Highly regulated or deeply specialised products are a different story. And that is where I see a big opportunity for software development agencies in the current market. Bigger companies can gain more control over their software, adapt software to their processes instead of adapting their processes to software, and potentially save money at the same time.
