A disinformation campaign that falsely alleged the deaths of three NATO serviceman during military exercises in Latvia, spread by dozens of accounts with a combined following of nearly two million. A cloned media outlet that published a fabricated story about Ukrainian drone debris damaging two F-16s at an air base in Estonia. Another hoax site that claimed the presidents of Estonia and Lithuania were linked to Jeffrey Epstein’s trafficking network, amplified by AI-narrated videos that gained traction on social media. This is the state of Russia-linked disinformation campaigns in Estonia and Latvia, and the story of Baltics' democratic resilience in the face of hybrid warfare. In case you missed it, last week we published our latest report, “Democratic Resilience in the Baltics: Tracking Russian Disinformation Campaigns,” as covered by: Sky News: https://lnkd.in/egBe3tzD Euronewshttps://lnkd.in/egBe3tzD Euronews: https://lnkd.in/ez2uDRDA inbox.lv: https://lnkd.in/egFXv7sh Sprawdzamto: https://lnkd.in/e8rxvrGY Request your copy of the report in the link in comments below.

NATO soldiers killed by a Ukrainian serviceman. It never happened. Over the weekend Sky News published my interview with Teresa Gottein-Martínez on this Russian campaign in Latvia. The story was accelerated by more than a dozen accounts, including bots and a Belarusian influencer, and by a single video shape shifting eight times across fifteen languages. The Sky News article and Refute’s report are both in the comments.

As Russia sought to reshape the information environment around this year's Baltic elections, Refute’s latest report unpacks the cloned news sites, rebuilt videos and borrowed truths that Baltic states reckoned with, and ultimately proved resilient against. Published today, the report “Democratic Resilience in the Baltics: Tracking Russian Disinformation Campaigns” traces how fabricated stories were produced, adapted and spread across the region and beyond, and the agile, effective responses mounted by the Baltic states. Its findings, featured in Euronews today by Giedrė Peseckytė, show that Russia’s disinformation campaigns left individual candidates and the voting process untouched, instead concentrating efforts on sowing confusion in the wider information environment of voters and institutions: https://lnkd.in/ez2uDRDA To learn more and request your copy, visit the link in comments.

It has been a busy week for us, as we attend both Resilience Media's #resilienceconference and #disinfo2026. We have been working in the background for some time studying Russian disinformation patterns in the Baltic states and today we are publishing our report of that: https://lnkd.in/e6eXQQ3S Unsurprisingly, being on the front line of information warfare helps develop good antibodies faster. If you are at either event, Tom Garnett and I would be delighted to share a physical copy.

  • We’re excited to participate in this year's edition of Resourcing Tomorrow, taking place in London from December 1-3.   Refute's CEO and co-founder Tom Garnett will be speaking on a panel titled, "The Geopolitics of Critical Minerals: National Security, Mineral Independence and Value Addition". The conversation will explore how mining, government and investment leaders can develop secure, specialised infrastructure to strengthen critical mineral supply chains supporting defence sector requirements. At the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, Andy Burnham announced the formation of a new National Centre for Information Defence to "detect, attribute, and disrupt" hostile state information attacks. We welcome this announcement, which reflects Refute's mission to outpace disinformation campaigns, and help governments and commercial organisations proactively respond to—and automatically stay ahead of—threats. Burnham spoke about disinformation in the context of wider information warfare, which can include bots, fake websites, forgeries of British brands and organisations, and inauthentic articles. He described the Centre's approach of working alongside stakeholders such as intelligence agencies, government, and law enforcement to combat these "insidious" disinformation campaigns, which have previously infiltrated British society and elections on numerous occasions. The recognition of disinformation as a national security priority, as evidenced by the new AI defence partnership with the US to protect the UK's critical national infrastructure, shows this is being taken seriously. Refute's Co-founder and CEO Tom Garnett weighs in 👇

At Refute, we’re really positive to see Andy Burnham putting the threat of AI-enabled disinformation firmly on the agenda with the announcement of the National Centre for Information Defence. We see disinformation as one of the major emerging threats facing governments, businesses and society. It can fracture communities, undermine trust, influence elections, target commercial organisations and ultimately impact individual citizens. Tackling this requires governments and industry to work together, with the technology, intelligence and data needed to identify and respond to influence campaigns as they emerge. The announcement of the National Centre for Information Defence is an important step towards building that capability in the UK. This is the challenge Refute was built to address, and it’s encouraging to see it receiving attention at this level.

  • "Disinformation is the next existential risk to society." Hear from our Co-founder and CEO, Tom Garnett, who outlines the rapidly rising stakes of disinformation for governments, commercial organisations, and society at large. Thank you to Soapbox and Grace Mortley for spotlighting our work.

  • Refute was named the best dual use company at the Dual Use Tech Showcase at Mansion House, and was featured in Sky News Defence Insider. Twenty companies were selected to present to investors and government customers at Dame Susan Langley's first showcase focused on defence and national resilience. Disinformation now sits in that line-up alongside strategic defence technology, and came out on top of attendee voting. Keynotes came from Luke Pollard MP, Minister of State for Defence Readiness and Industry, and General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ambassador of Ukraine to the UK, on how technology has evolved to support the war in Ukraine and how defence investment can help re-industrialise the UK. Thank you to Amadeus Capital Partners, who have backed us since the earliest stage, and to James Baker for the introduction and for joining our presentation. Read the Sky News coverage linked in the comments.
