A heads-up worth two minutes of your day. We have noticed an uptick in dental practices’ email accounts being targeted and compromised. Bad actors have been breaking into dental practices’ email accounts and using them to message other practices. The most dangerous part of this attack is the email looks like it’s from a real colleague you know and trust. Lately these messages are disguised as things you’d never think twice about: a “celebration of life” notice, or a simple “I’m sharing a file with you.” You open it expecting a document and instead need to install a program. That program is a trap. It’s using legitimate software, so antivirus usually lets it go right through. But once it’s installed, criminals can take control of the computer and quietly drop malware. Southridge is the only team that should ever ask you to install remote-access software or allow for a remote session on your computers. If anyone else does, including a familiar practice or a “vendor” stop and call us before you click or install anything. It’s true vendors may need remote access at times, but this should be granted once you call Southridge to verify. A few things to look out for: - A request to download or install a program, especially anything described as “remote support,” “screen share,” “viewer,” or an “update.” - A prompt to allow remote access or to read off a connection code to someone. - “IT” or a vendor reaching out unprompted to fix a problem you never reported. - Installer files (.exe, .msi) or links that download a program, including even from a name you recognize. It’s difficult to identify malicious tools. As a rule of thumb, if something about the flow feels off, such as being asked to download a program to view x-rays you’ve never needed before, or a colleague sharing a document via a service you’ve never seen them use, call Southridge. There’s no harm in double-checking. If someone tells you they’re from Southridge and you’re not sure, you can always hang up and call us at (203)-431-8324 to verify you were speaking with someone from Southridge. #technologypartner #computersales #computerservice #computersupport #cybersecurity #hippacomplaince #databackup #datarecovery #managedIT #itservices #itsupport #cloudcomputing #firewall #office365 #onlinesecurity

When people think about cyberattacks in healthcare, they often picture large hospital systems. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are increasingly targeting smaller dental practices as well. A recent ransomware attack at a Florida dental practice reportedly exposed sensitive patient information, including personal details, treatment records, and financial data. This is an important reminder that dental practices of every size are responsible for protecting patient information. A strong cybersecurity program should include: • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) • Endpoint detection and response (EDR) • Security awareness training • Regular vulnerability management • Tested backups and disaster recovery plans Patients trust their dental providers with some of their most sensitive information. Protecting that data is no longer just an IT issue—it's a patient care issue. #DentalPractice #DentalTechnology #CyberSecurity #HIPAA #DentalOffice #HealthcareIT #DataSecurity #UseMFA

Cybercriminals don't always hack their way in. Sometimes they simply trick people into visiting the wrong website. Researchers recently uncovered thousands of fake FIFA World Cup-related websites designed to look legitimate. Their goal? Steal login credentials, payment information, and personal data from unsuspecting visitors. It's a good reminder that spoofing isn't just an email problem—it's a website problem too. Before entering sensitive information: • Verify the website address carefully • Avoid clicking links from unsolicited emails or text messages • Navigate directly to the organization's official website when possible • Watch for slight misspellings or lookalike domains Attackers are getting better at making fake websites look real. Taking a few extra seconds to verify where you are can help prevent financial loss, identity theft, and compromised accounts. #CyberSecurity #Phishing #Spoofing #DataSecurity #CyberAwareness #UseMFA

Contact us today. We are helping our clients roll out artificial intelligence in a safe and controlled approach.
Artificial Intelligence is transforming the way small businesses operate. Employees are using AI tools to draft emails, summarize documents, analyze data, create marketing content, and improve productivity. While these tools offer significant benefits, they also introduce a growing security concern that many organizations are overlooking: Shadow AI. Shadow AI occurs when employees use AI platforms without the knowledge, approval, or oversight of their employer. In many cases, sensitive company information, client data, financial records, proprietary processes, or even regulated information may be entered into public AI tools without understanding where that data is stored, how it is used, or who may have access to it. The challenge isn't that employees are using AI—it's that they're often doing so without guardrails. Businesses need clear policies, approved AI platforms, data governance standards, and technical controls to ensure innovation doesn't come at the expense of security, privacy, or compliance. For organizations in regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services, legal services, and manufacturing, the risks can be even greater. This is where having the right technology partner becomes critical. A knowledgeable IT and cybersecurity provider can help organizations: • Develop AI usage policies and acceptable use guidelines • Identify and mitigate Shadow AI risks • Implement secure, enterprise-approved AI solutions • Protect sensitive data from unauthorized exposure • Ensure compliance with industry regulations • Monitor and manage emerging AI-related security threats AI is here to stay, and it has the potential to be an incredible business tool. The goal should not be to block innovation, but to embrace it responsibly with the proper safeguards in place. Is your organization actively managing AI usage, or are employees bringing AI into your environment without visibility? Call Southridge Technology for help in assessing your needs.
