“We aren't here to predict the future. We are here to build systems resilient enough to thrive regardless of how the future unfolds.” My board of trustees at California Restaurant Mutual Benefit Corp (CRMBC) recently asked me what was the most important thing I learned at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business Executive Program. It is this. ⬆️ At SEP, we we learned myriad ways to lead, communicate, finance, problem solve, negotiate, market, etc… all of which was incredibly valuable. But the most valuable lesson sat on TOP of these specific skills. It spread across every course, reading, theory, and lecture. That was to LEAD BY DESIGN: 👉🏽To architect systems that outlive my tenure vs managing people or products. 👉🏽 To build infrastructures that is prepared for whatever happens economically, politically, or globally. 👉🏽 To consider “why” we are doing what we do - ie. does it fit with our long-term goals, culture, and values. 👉🏽 To be realistic about and embrace emerging technologies and responsibly incorporate them into our future. 👉🏽 To adopt governance over decades, not just today. I learned to lead as an architect of systems as opposed to just solving business problems.
