There were so many opportunities for Charlie Ward, as he grew into who he is today, to look around and take in everything. There was his father, Charlie Sr., the high school football coach who was a father figure to his players to the point where he washed their clothes. There were Bobby Bowden at Florida State University and Jeff Van Gundy and Gregg Popovich in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Through all these interactions, he was creating the narrative of his life. Ward, who won a national title as Florida State’s quarterback, also became the only Heisman Trophy winner to play in the NBA (for 11 seasons as a guard). He was a member of the New York Knicks the last time they faced the San Antonio Spurs in the #NBAFinals. Ward, who led Florida State University High to a state boys basketball title in 2022, just finished his first season as the men’s basketball coach at Florida A&M University and has started the Charlie Ward Champions Ranch. “You teach life through sports because there’s a choice to be made, and there's an outcome,” he tells USA TODAY. “There's a consequence. And there are opportunities. Sometimes we take advantage of them, sometimes we don't. And regardless of what the outcome is, we all have to learn from those outcomes.” Ward, a father of three, spoke with us at the Aspen Institute Sports & Society #ProjectPlay Summit. Here’s how his remarkable story - he was also drafted by the New York Yankees despite not playing baseball in college - can help young athletes and their parents navigate their own journeys. https://lnkd.in/ebTBxzuq

Once a unifying symbol, the American flag has come to represent political alienation for some. But for those who stitch the stars and stripes, its meaning is personal. We toured Annin Flagmakers, which bills itself as the oldest and largest manufacturer of the Star-Spangled Banner in the U.S. https://lnkd.in/eqGrDKPQ

With millions of soccer fans and tourists set to travel to 11 U.S. cities hosting the #WorldCup in the coming weeks, public health officials are wary of potential risks from infectious diseases, such as the #Ebola outbreak racing through Central Africa. The sporting event comes after the United States exited the World Health Organization and dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, or #USAID, which helped monitor infectious diseases and supplied personal protective gear to health workers around the globe. Of the 48 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup, 39 will train in the United States and their fans will follow. The international travelers arrive as the nation's public health backbone, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doesn't have a full-time leader and has faced devastating cuts. The Trump administration's sweeping cuts in the federal workforce have reduced the agency's staff by nearly 30% since last year. USA TODAY https://lnkd.in/eWP8_C5u
