Consults with students, parents, staff and other community personnel to help meet the needs of all students. Works with administrator(s) to help provide support from the campus and district level for student success.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Master's degree in guidance counseling (preferred)
Valid Texas counseling certificate (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Experience
Three years teaching experience preferred
Ability to become certified.
Major Responsibilities And Duties
Guidance
Provides guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career, and personal plans.
Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on concerns relative to their students.
Provides confidential crisis counseling and consultation to students.
Develops and maintains effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
Consults with administrators, faculty and other special services personnel relative to school's curricular offerings.
Works cooperatively with middle school counselors to ease the transition of the students to high school.
Conducts registration conferences with parents and students new to the district.
Counseling
Counsel individual students and small groups with presenting needs and concerns.
Consultation
Conferences with students, teachers, parents, and other relevant individuals concerning grades and works together for improvement.
Informs students of the requirement of state-mandated test dates, credit-by-exam dates, dual credit, college early admissions programs, and/or progress toward graduation.
Disseminates information to students concerning summer school, correspondence courses, and other alternative forms of education, in addition to information on colleges and career opportunities.
Assists students with the application process for college admissions, scholarships, financial aid, and alternative postsecondary education, including letters of recommendation.
Assessment
Participate in planning and evaluation of campus standardized testing program.
Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately and communicate to school personnel, students, and their parents.
Maintain the confidentiality of student assessment.
Program Management
Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs, priorities, and program objectives.
Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents.
Identifies and verifies PEIMS data for identifying students in "at risk" situations.
Administration
Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in guidance and counseling area.
Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
Assists the principal in organizing commencement ceremonies. Plans and coordinates senior honors and awards programs.
Performs other tasks and assumes such responsibilities as related to the position and as assigned.
Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.

Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.

Scheduling
Coordinates with the campus principal in developing a master schedule, and schedules classes for students including schedule changes.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting)

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise assigned counseling aide(s) and clerical employee(s).
Maintain emotional control under stress. Reading, ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); maintain emotional control under stress; interpret policy, procedures, and data. Physical Demands: Occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Moderate standing, stooping, bending and lifting; may need the ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
