Job Description

The Facilities Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of industrial facilities and infrastructure systems. This role supports day-to-day operations, maintenance activities, capital projects, process optimization initiatives, and facility improvements. The Facilities Engineer collaborates with operations, maintenance, project teams, contractors, and engineering disciplines to ensure facilities operate in accordance with applicable standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

The position requires strong technical expertise in facility systems, troubleshooting, project execution, risk management, and operational support. Depending on experience level, the engineer may lead investigations, risk assessments, performance improvement initiatives, and mentor junior engineers.

Responsibilities

Operations & Facility Support

  • Serve as an area or facility engineer supporting assigned operational systems and infrastructure.
  • Provide technical support for facility operations, maintenance, repairs, and equipment modifications.
  • Support operational changes, troubleshooting efforts, and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct routine facility surveillance and performance reviews using key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Monitor equipment performance and recommend improvements to optimize safety, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Support facility shutdowns, turnarounds, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist with commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.

Engineering & Project Execution

  • Review engineering designs, calculations, drawings, and technical documents to ensure compliance with engineering standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support planning, design, and execution of capital improvement and infrastructure projects.
  • Develop scopes of work, technical specifications, and project execution plans.
  • Coordinate with contractors, consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders throughout project lifecycles.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) processes and facility modifications.
  • Participate in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) and commissioning activities.
  • Assist with capital budget planning and project cost management.

Risk Management & Safety

  • Participate in risk assessments, hazard reviews, process safety studies, and operational risk evaluations.
  • Support or lead Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs), hazard identification reviews, and process safety initiatives.
  • Identify operational risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support closure of corrective actions resulting from audits, incidents, and risk assessments.

Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead or participate in incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action development.
  • Identify opportunities to improve facility performance, reliability, efficiency, and safety.
  • Conduct performance testing, operational trials, and process optimization studies.
  • Develop and maintain operating guidelines, procedures, and engineering documentation.
  • Analyze facility data and recommend improvements based on performance trends.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Coordinate activities across operations, maintenance, engineering, and project teams.
  • Communicate technical issues, project updates, and operational recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers and technical personnel.
  • Provide technical leadership during facility projects, troubleshooting efforts, and operational challenges.
  • Support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives.

Skills And Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience supporting industrial facilities, infrastructure systems, manufacturing, energy, utilities, oil and gas, water systems, or related industries.
  • Strong understanding of engineering principles, design standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience supporting facility operations, maintenance, reliability, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Experience with project execution, capital project development, and engineering support during construction and commissioning.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, process safety management, and hazard review processes.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a dynamic operational environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting water infrastructure, water treatment systems, produced water systems, utility systems, or fluid handling facilities.
  • Experience with pipeline hydraulics, pump systems, fluid transport, and pressure systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Experience with process optimization and facility performance improvement initiatives.
  • Experience conducting HAZOPs, risk assessments, and process safety studies.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment, piping systems, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and associated infrastructure.
  • Experience managing capital budgets and supporting project cost controls.
  • Previous leadership, mentoring, or supervisory experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is a plus.
