$7.2 billion. 660 km of new transmission lines. 14 GW of renewable power headed to Newfoundland and Labrador. Ottawa just committed to what Prime Minister Mark Carney calls the largest clean energy investment in North American history, part of a nearly $50 billion national program. The anchor projects: a major upgrade to the 55-year-old Churchill Falls Generating Station and the long-planned 2.7 GW Gull Island hydro facility on the Churchill River. For field crews, this is a multi-year pipeline. Transmission and electrical trades should be watching the 660 km of new high-voltage lines closely. Civil and heavy equipment crews have hydro and dam upgrade work stacking up for years, and onshore wind construction adds another 2 GW of scope in Labrador. Stantec and WSP have handled the early geotechnical and environmental studies, but the utilities' internal units are expected to lead construction, meaning the subcontracting picture is still forming. Renewable energy infrastructure still starts with strong fundamentals — planning, fabrication and steel built for long-term performance. Our team at Solico Metal recently completed the fabrication and supply of six galvanized structural steel support structures for a solar energy facility in southeast Calgary. The project included approximately 16,806 lb of structural steel, along with detailing review, fabrication coordination, material supply and installation support.
