Things Lead to Things

I attended a networking event a few weeks ago.  I sat next to someone I had never met at dinner.  We struck up a conversation and he invited me to his office.  When I got to his office, the first thing he was, “I enjoyed meeting you.  I have no idea if anything will come out of this meeting but I like to say, ‘Things lead to things.’”  We had a thoroughly engaging conversation.  It turned out he was working on a project that is similar to something I am working on.  We had a follow up conversation later in the week.  There is a good chance we will end up working together in some capacity.

I love the phrase, “Things lead to things.”  You might start somewhere and end up somewhere else.  The key is you have to start.  Take the meeting.  Have an open mind.  It is true that opportunity knocks.  It’s also true that you have to answer the door.

One point I emphasize with younger professionals is that “networking” doesn’t consist of developing relationships with people you think can help you. It means developing relationships with interesting people. Developing this sort of social capital is rewarding in its own right.

So true, Brian. You can't discover if you don't explore.
