Samarium is a rare earth element (REE) used for radar, sonar, missile guidance systems, and other modern defense technologies. A disruption in the supply of REEs would affect national security, as they are key to surveillance, navigation, and targeting technologies, including military satellites, infantry vehicles and aircrafts, and command systems. In addition to its defense uses, samarium acts as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors and plays a key role in cancer treatments. 🌊 It's official: PacWave South, the first fully operational, pre-permitted, and grid-connected wave energy test facility in the continental United States, is now open for business! CMEI’s Hydropower and Hydrokinetic Office (H2O), the facility’s operator, Oregon State University, and other partners recently gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Our oceans offer a largely untapped resource of abundant, affordable power,” said H2O Director Nichole Fitzgerald. “The PacWave South facility will help reduce testing barriers for wave energy developers and spur innovation to America’s benefit for years to come.” Check out the full announcement below: https://lnkd.in/e5MnjuCw

Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson joined Secretary Chris Wright at Southern Methodist University (SMU) to announce the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Mine of the Future initiative. DOE will invest $73 million across four selected projects to establish Mine of the Future proving grounds for real-world testing of new mining technologies. One of the four projects, led by SMU, will create the world’s first synthetic mine within an advanced drilling and sensing test facility. By investing in advanced mining testing sites, DOE is securing America’s critical materials supply chain, increasing domestic mineral production, reducing reliance on foreign sources, and strengthening U.S. energy independence. Yesterday, Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson visited the Albemarle Corporation Kings Mountain Project Center. With funding from CMEI, the site’s lithium mine is supporting a new, commercial-scale U.S.-based lithium materials processing plant, resulting in lithium concentrate for downstream battery manufacturing facilities. During her visit she announced the PROSPECT Planning Prize, which challenges U.S. academic institutions to develop plans that would increase the number of graduates with degrees in critical-minerals-related fields within two years. By investing in the talent that will operate centers like Albemarle, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing in our nation’s growing energy needs. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the United States will need approximately 6,000 new engineers in the mining sector over the next 10 years to meet our nation’s energy needs. Finding new, energized talent will require greater coordination between government, universities, industry, modernized curricula, and a concerted effort to raise awareness of career opportunities in mining. The PROSPECT program represents DOE’s commitment to support prospective students as they consider careers in mining. While visiting Montana Technological University, one of our nation’s 14 universities with ABET-accredited mining programs, Assistant Secretary Robertson toured the facilities and spoke with students who represent the future of mining.
