The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) selected 21 projects to receive up to $99 million to advance geothermal energy development across the United States. The projects include enhanced geothermal systems field tests and exploration drilling to help validate next-generation technologies, characterize promising resources, and reduce the risks that can hold back geothermal development. By putting American innovation to work and unlocking more of our abundant domestic geothermal resources, these projects will advance President Trump’s agenda for American energy dominance while helping deliver the affordable, reliable, and secure energy needed to power American industry and our growing economy. 🎓 At Lehigh University, HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli talked with students about two ways to get hands-on energy research experience with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship is a 10-week paid summer internship for undergraduate and master's students in STEM majors, with a research project at DOE headquarters or a national laboratory, mentorship from DOE scientists and engineers, and a Technical Forum presentation in Pittsburgh. The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), DOE's only government-owned, government-operated national laboratory, also offers internships and fellowships for students, recent graduates, postdocs, and faculty across its Centers of Excellence in Morgantown, Pittsburgh, Albany, and Golden. The Powering America Roadshow came to Pennsylvania. 📸 HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli brought the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Powering America Roadshow to Lehigh University, where he toured research facilities, met with faculty, and spoke with students about work spanning coal, critical minerals, geothermal energy, AI, and advanced computing. The roadshow’s goal is to get outside Washington and hear directly from the people doing the work. That work included DOE-supported research to develop thermal energy storage that could help existing coal plants operate more flexibly, as well as efforts to recover critical minerals from coal waste. Coccodrilli noted that coal has applications beyond electricity generation, including steelmaking and the production of critical minerals, graphite and other carbon materials, chemicals, and fuels.
HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli joined Mexican Ambassador to the United States Roberto Lazzeri Montaño at the Mexican Cultural Institute for El Grito, celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day and the 216th anniversary of the start of its independence movement. On track for another record year for American oil! 🛢️ A new U.S. Energy Information Administration analysis forecasts U.S. crude oil production will average 13.8 million barrels per day in 2026, surpassing the record of 13.7 million b/d set just last year. Production already averaged 13.7 million b/d in the first half of 2026, up 2% over the same period in 2025. 📈 Two American regions are driving the growth: Permian production in Texas and New Mexico is forecast to average 6.8 million b/d this year, 3% higher than in 2025. Output from the Federal Gulf of America rose 10% in the first half of the year, powered by four major new projects that came online over the past year, with four more expected by the end of 2026. American production keeps climbing, and HGEO is working to keep it that way. "One of the main purposes of this visit is to hear directly from companies about their needs and the challenges they face at the investment site." 🤝 HGEO Acting Assistant Secretary Curt Coccodrilli shared that message with POSCO International Corp in Seoul, leading a U.S. government delegation that included the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of the Interior. Meeting with POSCO International President Lee Gye-in and senior executives, the delegation discussed LNG, power generation, energy infrastructure, and closer Korea–U.S. cooperation. Both sides agreed to set up working teams to keep the conversation moving.
