Gave Spot a cowboy hat, and Spot gave us a line dancing routine. 🤠🤖 Boston Dynamics’ Spot showed off a few extra moves at NECX 2026 ~ equipped with the new Spot Cam 2 mounted on the front and the Gamma Reality Inc. Wrapping up NECX 2026 in Dallas with a lot of optimism about where our industry is heading. Across the conference, the message was consistent: maximize the performance of today’s fleet, accelerate the deployment of new nuclear, modernize licensing and project delivery, strengthen the workforce and supply chain, and use digital and AI capabilities to help us move faster and operate more effectively. My favourite session was “AI in Practice: What Nuclear Is Doing Today.” Hearing Chuck Kharrl of STP Nuclear Operating Company and Melissa Moran, of Southern Nuclear speak so openly about how their organizations are embracing AI was exceptional. The examples were practical, ambitious and already creating real value. What stood out most to me is that this is no longer about isolated AI pilots. The opportunity is to embed AI into day-to-day nuclear work: connecting enterprise knowledge, improving decision-making, accelerating engineering and maintenance workflows, strengthening equipment reliability, and giving our people better tools to do their jobs. That is where we collectively need to get to if we want to both optimize the existing fleet and accelerate new nuclear. Another highlight was “The Innovator’s Playbook: From Idea to Action” with Jesse Thomas of Southern Nuclear, Taylor Smith of Vistra Corp. and Matt Hall of Evergy. A great discussion on something equally important: having the technology is only one part of innovation. Moving ideas through a complex, highly regulated organization requires the right culture, leadership, relationships and willingness to execute. It’s always a pleasure catching up with the American Nuclear Society president, Dr. H.M. Hashemian and to have a great discussion with Wesley Bausch, of Dominion Energy around innovation and the direction of the industry. For XCIS AI, these conversations reinforced why we are so focused on helping nuclear organizations move AI and data from concepts into secure, governed, production solutions that create measurable operational value. Most importantly, NECX created the opportunity to reconnect with partners, meet new people across the U.S. nuclear community, and start conversations that I’m looking forward to continuing well beyond the conference. “We all love nuclear... but it’s about time we admit a few things.” Straight talk from Joe Dominguez of Constellation Energy at NECX 2026. One of the big hurdles for nuclear is figuring out how to scale...and how to create a financing and risk-sharing model that makes projects costing tens of billions of dollars bankable. It’s a massive bet, even for a large utility. Investors need confidence that projects can actually come in on time and on budget. Hyperscalers may be the only customers capable of helping make new nuclear projects financeable. They have the balance sheet to backstop some of the risk. A few other takeaways: • The industry needs to rebuild a nuclear supply chain and workforce that have eroded over decades. NECX panelists have repeatedly cited workforce as one of the biggest gaps the industry needs to close. • The first reactor is only the beginning. The real test is what happens with reactor #2, #3 and #10. Can lessons learned translate into faster construction and lower costs? Huge question. • There's a lot of discussion about finding the right balance between innovation and knowing when to stop changing the design. As Jeff Waksman put it, if every reactor remains an experimental one-off, the industry has failed to make the transition to commercial deployment. ⚛️ The appetite for nuclear is clear and political support is strong on both sides of the aisle.
