Watching strangers believe in your kid before he believes in himself. That's what happened at Techstars Startup Weekend Tampa. "Do I have to go?" That was my 16-year-old on Friday. By Sunday, he was asking when the next one is. He walked in hesitant, unsure if he belonged in a room full of adults chasing big ideas. 54 hours later, he and his team had a fully baked plan to help overseas athletes compete for D1 opportunities here in the USA. I was there as a mentor. But I got to be something else too: a dad watching his son discover that entrepreneurship isn't about age or experience. It's about showing up, listening, and building something that matters. Years ago, Startup Weekend changed my life. This weekend, I got to watch it change his. To the Tampa startup community and Brendan Brennan: thank you for making a 16-year-old feel like he belonged. That's the magic of this ecosystem. Two weeks ago I joined Techstars Tampa, a Startup Community Partnership Weekend at Embarc Collective. The weekend pushed my thinking and sharpened my entrepreneurial skills. I met people who cared about building new ideas and taking action. The energy in the room pushed me to do more. Mariella Hendricks and I earned 3rd place in the competition. Thank you to Miranda Johnson, Zachary Damato and all the other mentors for the guidance and to Ilene Marcus and Martika Brianne Jones, M.S. for running a strong event. Every startup has a story... and this weekend, I was privileged to share mine. 🗣️ I rarely share experiences from my childhood with anyone, however, it's overcoming the craziness I endured early on in life that built the resilience, determination, fearlessness, and a hunger for learning in me. It turns out those traits fostered in the hardships of my childhood are guiding me now as I go on this entrepreneurial journey to build a global tech education movement in my 50s!!!! 🚀🚀🚀🚀 Thank you to Martika Brianne Jones, M.S. for inviting me to be the keynote speaker and share my S.T.O.R.Y. with aspiring tech startup founders during the Techstars Startup Weekend Tampa.
