Introduction
The various methods of production are not associated with a particular volume of production. Similarly, several methods may be used at different stages of the overall production process.
Continuous Process
Processing of material is continuous and progressive Process takes place without interruption Uses technology to a greater extent
Eg: Petroleum Refinery, Power Plant
Semi-Continuous Process
It is continuous and repetitive in nature Production of discrete parts moving from work stations to work stations at a controlled rate
Eg: Electronic products, Automobile
Intermittent Process
The product requires processing on a variety of machines Stop at regular intervals of time Different varieties of machines Process is slow Two types Batch process Job shop
Batch process
Batch methods require that the work for any task is divided into parts or operations The main aims of the batch method are, - Concentrate skills (specialization) - Achieve high equipment utilization
Eg : Electrical Motor, Mechanical products
Job shop
Production of large number of different products Job requires different set or sequence of processing steps Similar resources in the same department
Eg: Furniture Manufacture, Service Station
PROJECT
It is not a process flow structure Process that handle very complex and that which have unique set of activities Has to be completed in a limited span of time A new process formulation is also a project Eg: New Road Laying, New Product Development
AUTOMISATION
Reduces human involvement Latest technology involved Reduces human capital Very fast Higher Accuracy Eg: Automobile, Pharma
